Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT), named after former captains of Australia and India, Allan Border and Sunil Gavaskar, is a Test series contested by the two current heavyweights of the game since the 1996-97 season.

The BGT is played every once in two or three years either in India or Australia with the hosts alternating in most editions. So far, the Border-Gavaskar Trophy has been held 17 times.

The BGT, which started as a one-off Test in 1996, has evolved into 2-match, 3-match or 4-match series or 5-match series, a first in the series played in 2024-25. India has hosted the BGT 8 times, while Australia also has played hosts 8 times so far.

In the 17 editions so far, India hold a huge advantage, having won the series 10 times against Australia, who have won it 6 times with one series ending in a draw that year also trophy was given to India as the holders. So, in total India has won BGT 11 times.

In the 9 home series, India has won 8 times and lost once, while the Indian team has won two and drawn one series Down Under. Most of the meetings have been very close and intense, but at least four series have been white-washes.

In total, there have been 61 Tests played in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Among the 61, Australia has won 23 Tests, while India has won 25 Tests and 13 meetings between the two sides have ended in draw.

Before the BGT from 1947-1992, India and Australia had met in 50 Tests in 12 series. In the 12 series, Australia had won 7 and India had won once with four India vs Australia Test series ending in draws.
