Commentary
That's a wrap - Righto, the first doubleheader day in the 2026 TNPL has provided plenty of exhilarating action. We have already seen 6 out of the 8 teams take centre stage and kick off their season, and next up, it is time for the two remaining teams to go play their first match. It will be SKM Salem Spartans going up against Kovai Kings on Thursday, August 6. That game is scheduled to begin at 2 pm GMT (7.30 pm IST), but as usual, you can also join us a lot sooner for the build-up. Until then, take care and goodbye!
Player of the Match - NS Harish gets the accolade for his superb spell of 4/25 in 4 overs.
The Presentation ceremony...
Strong team, but a faltering start - The Super Gillies simply weren't at the races, be it with the ball or even with the bat. They failed to take advantage whenever a wicket fell, and allowed partnerships to flourish. Ashwanth Valthapa bowled well without picking up a wicket, whereas M Silambarasan was the top performer with two wickets and an economical spell. Coming to the batting performance, skipper Narayan Jagadeesan gave them a fast start, but there weren't enough contributions from the top order. Dinesh Raj S played a good cameo through the middle order, reigniting the chase, and when Ashwanth Valthapa started to get on a roll, it seemed like Chepauk might actually take things deep. However, they kept losing wickets throughout their inning and were bowled out in just 17.2 overs.
Contributions everywhere - Nellai Royal Kings notched up 204 big runs up front and apart from their opener Santhosh Kumar D, everyone else contributed with the bat. Athish S R was the standout and then there were a couple of 30s from Rithik Easwaran and skipper Sonu Yadav, who played really quickly. Then Muhammed Adnan Khan laid the finishing touches with a 9-ball-25. With the ball, again, it was an all-round showing as 4 of the bowlers were in the wickets column. NS Harish was the standout with a four-fer as Yadav himself and the likes of Rohit R and Rocky Bhasker picked up two wickets each to seal a comfortable victory.
Signed, sealed, and delivered - Nellai Royal Kings kick-start the new season with a huge win over TNPL royalty, a.k.a. Chepauk Super Gillies. It was a comprehensive showing with both bat and ball from Nellai, and they have thoroughly deserved the win.
OUT! CAUGHT! The skipper picks up the final wicket to complete a comprehensive win for his side. Nellai Royal Kings win by 50 runs and get their campaign off to a winning start. Sonu pushes the length up, on off. Abhishek swings at it with all his might. The bat turns in his hand, and Tanwar only gets the height and not the distance. Sachin Rathi is well in off the ropes, and he moves to his right at long off to gobble it up.
Dug in short, over middle. Abhishek Tanwar ducks under it.
Sonu Yadav brings himself back on, looking to finish things up.
Kept out safely. A bit of turn, shorter and on off. M Silambarasan hangs back to defend. A superb night with the ball for Harish, finishing with figures of 4/25 from his 4 overs.
M Silambarasan is the last man in for Chepauk Super Gillies.
OUT! IN THE AIR AND GONE! Two wickets in the over for NS Harish. He continues to dart the ball in with a flat trajectory from around the wicket. This is on the shorter side, on off. Vignesh gets down on a knee for the slog. Skies it a long way up towards long on, where Sachin Rathi settles himself under it and does the rest. Wicket number 4 for Harish. He has one ball left in his spell. Can he pick the fifth scalp?
Half a shout for LBW. Not given by the umpire. Seemed to be sliding down leg. Speared in, attacking the front pad. Vignesh plays all around it and wears it on the pads.
No run, the batter goes back in the crease to flick but cannot find the gap.
M Vignesh walks out to bat next.
OUT! TIMBER! You miss, I hit says NS Harish and he now has three wickets to his name. Pushed through from around the wicket, on middle, on a good length. Swapnil has a big heave across the line but misses it completely and hears the death rattle as the ball clatters into the top of the middle stump. Chepauk Super Gillies are now 8 down for 154, requiring 51 runs in 22 balls.
1 run, the pull shot comes into play as this is played behind square leg for one.
NS Harish is back on to finish his spell.
Off-pace ball, on a nagging length, punched to long off for a single.
1 run, the batter comes forward and plays an off drive for a run.
