She played a pivotal role in Australia's triumph at Trent Bridge, orchestrating victory with her remarkable bowling figures of 12-165 for the match. These figures rank as the second-best in the history of women's Tests and marked Australia's first Test win since 2015.

Furthermore, Gardner's exceptional performance extended beyond that match, as she emerged as the leading wicket-taker among Australian women across all formats during the voting period, claiming a total of 56 wickets in 30 matches. Lyon's exemplary performance, despite facing challenges such as injury setbacks, showcased his unwavering determination and skill, solidifying his status as a key player in the Australian cricketing landscape.

The devastating calf injury that he suffered at Lord's arguably hindered Australia's chances of securing an outright Ashes victory. However, his exceptional performance both before and after this setback propelled him to claim the award, surpassing Usman Khawaja, who was the leading run-scorer in the format for the year, and captain Pat Cummins.

Despite sitting out three Ashes Tests due to injury, Lyon outshone his fellow bowlers by taking the highest number of wickets in the 10 Tests he participated in during the voting period.

His outstanding contribution was particularly evident during the Border-Gavaskar series in India held in February-March, where he played a crucial role in guiding Australia to one of their most memorable victories in recent history at Indore.
