David Warner-Quinton de Kock scuffle: From Warne to Vaughan, who said what

Bengaluru, March 6: Australia's resounding victory over South Africa in the first Test took a back seat as the off-field scuffle between David Warner and Quinton de Kock overshadowed everything good the Aussies did in the game.

Warner, the vice-captain of Australia, who has had quite a few on and off-field altercations that put him under the category of an 'ultimate bully' with the latest altercation that occurred on the fourth day of the Durban Test.

A video footage emerged showing Aussie firebrand Warner pointing and directing a verbal barrage at De Kock during Sunday's play at Kingsmead before he was restrained and pulled away by his teammates. The incident reportedly took place as the players were returning to their dressing rooms at tea.

Players from both the sides came out in the defence of both the players as the entire episode took an ugly turn when the Australian side alleged that De Kock made a personal comment on Warner.

Several former cricketers spoke boldly about the issue even as the respective teams tried to defend their players. Many felt that the entire issue was just another instance that shouldn't have happened in the first place and brought disrepute to the Gentlemen's Game, had the players showed some maturity.

Here's who has said what on this entire controversy:

Steve Smith, Australia Captain

Steve Smith, Australia Captain

"What was said and done during that interval was regrettable on both sides. Quinton got personal and evoked an emotional response from Davey (Warner). Those things are not on from both sides. Getting personal on the field is crossing the line in my opinion.

"We play our best cricket when we're aggressive when we're in the fight together and hunting as a pack as one. We're working with each other and backing our mates up in the field. That's part of being an Australian."

Faf du Plessis, SA Captain

"From what I've heard there was a lot of personal stuff being said, to and from. Who started it, I don't know. If it was happening on the field it should have been nipped in the bud. The fact that it spilled over after the field shouldn't have happened."

"I heard the commotion and went outside and just asked David to go into his dressing room. It needs to stay on the field when you are chirping each other. There need to be boundaries on that."

Cricket Australia

"CA (Cricket Australia) is aware of reports of an incident between players in Durban," a Cricket Australia spokesman said in a statement.

"CA is working to establish the facts of what has occurred and will not be commenting further until that has been done."

Cricket South Africa

"It's rather unfortunate that the incident took place and certainly not in the spirit of the game. The match referee had spoken to us after the day's play. We will await any further communication from the ICC around this incident," said CSA manager.

Darren Lehman, Australia coach

"He's vice-captain of the Australian cricket team. We're certainly supporting David. We want to play a way that gets us success and for us we've just got to make sure we don't cross the line, that's the key."

Adam Gilchrist, former Australia captain

One of the first cricketers to speak up on the issue, former Australia captain Gilchrist tweeted saying,"Ugly scenes in Durban. Can only assume something very personal has been throw at @davidwarner31 for this type of reaction. Not a good look all round."

Graeme Smith

Former South African captain Graeme Smith said, "We've got used to Davey (Warner) over the years. I think the less interest you take in him the better. He can be a bit of a fool at times. It's best just to let him be.

Shane Warne, former Australia spin legend

The legendary Australia spinner tweeted, "Chat, banter, sledging has always been apart of any series between SA & Oz. Both sides always give it out. Respect is the key & I hope nothing personal was said to any player towards anyone from either side. Have a beer together afterwards & get on with it - stop the whining!"

Michael Vaughan, ex-England captain

In response to Warne's tweet former England captain Michael Vaughan said, "Correct Warney....but it's clear plenty of personal nonsense has been spoken & the man in question I hear from many has been doing it for a while so I guess someone eventually was going to touch a nerve with a response."
