New Delhi, April 11: Mumbai Indians finally tasted a win by defeating Delhi Capitals by 6 wickets in the latter's home ground, Arun Jaitley Stadium, in match number 16 of IPL 2023 on Tuesday (April 11).
Both teams were winless in the competition before the start of the game, but Mumbai Indians held on to their nerves in the death final moments to win the game and opened their account on the points table with two vital points.

MI - who were coming on the back of two successive defeats - were led to perfection by their inspirational and five-time IPL-winning captain Rohit Sharma and he slammed a sublime fifty.
Delhi Capitals are languishing at number 10 in the points table with four defeats on the trot. Captained by David Warner they will have to take inspiration from the performance against MI and come back strongly in the next game.
Warner - who lifted the IPL trophy in 2016 as Sunrisers Hyderabad captain - will be aiming to lead his team from the front because four consecutive defeats in the first half of the season will certainly dent his team's morale badly.
Mumbai Indians - who also finished tenth in the previous edition - will be aiming to change their fortunes in the new season but their performance in the first two games has been disappointing.
MI's batting has been below-par as big names in the team like Rohit, Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav, and Tim David have all failed to deliver. However, young Tilak Varma has certainly raised his stocks in the tournament.
Delhi Capitals' storyline hasn't been any different as coach Ricky Ponting's side has failed to put up a combined effort. Their key batters, including skipper Warner, have let the team down and bowlers leaked runs at critical stages.
Against Mumbai, the hosts would be aiming to return to winning ways and kick-start their campaign in the tournament with a victory.
Here's how the match between DC and MI panned out:
Done and dusted! Mumbai Indians have secured their first win of the season and they've defeated Delhi Capitals. The match went down the wire as MI needed 20 runs from the last two overs and Mustafizur Rahman - the left-arm pacer - bowled three good balls in the 19th over but was hit for two maximums by Cameron Green and Tim David of alternate balls. MI needed 5 runs to win from the final over and Anrich Nortje bowled exceedingly well to defend 5 runs and the winner was decided on the final ball. MI needed two off the last delivery and David and Green absorbed the pressure to win it for their team.
Abhishek Porel - the young wicketkeeper-batter - took a stunning catch diving towards his right and ended a special Rohit Sharma knock with a special catch. Rohit walks back for 65 off 45 balls. MI - 143/4
Mukesh Kumar got the big wickets of dangerous-looking Tilak Varma (47) and Suryakumar Yadav (0) on successive deliveries and pulled the match in his team's favour after getting hit for 16 runs on the first four deliveries.
First IPL fifty for Rohit Sharma in 25 innings. His last half-century for Mumbai Indians came after 2021. The long wait is finally over for the Hitman.

SIX!! Rohit Sharma plays another pull shot to perfection off Nortje and the ball sails way back into the stands. It was a 95-meter-long maximum from Rohit.
Run Out! A mix-up in the middle between Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan costs later his wicket. Ishan (31) responded to his captain and batting partner's call for a single but was nowhere in the frame when bowler Lalit Yadav disturbed the stumps. MI - 72/1
Rohit Sharma pulls Lalit Yadav and gets a maximum over the mid-wicket region. The Hitman is looking in a sublime touch tonight and Mumbai reach 68 without a loss in the powerplay. Solid start for the chasing team. Rohit - 37* and Ishan - 30* are batting beautifully for Mumbai.

Wicket! Meredith castles Anrich Nortje's leg stumps with a brilliant yorker and Delhi Capitals have been bundled out for 172 in 19.4 overs. Mumbai Indians bowlers have taken the last 5 wickets in a space of 10 balls. A batting collapse from Delhi.
Run Out! Kuldeep Yadav was trying to sneak a quick single and give strike to Abhishek Porel but an alert Nehal Wadera hit the wicket at the non-striker's end to send him back. 3 wickets in this over. DC - 166 for 8 in 18.5 overs.
Wicket! David Warner's slow knock of 51 off 48 balls comes to an end. He mistimed and Meredith took a fine catch at short third man. DC are 166-7 in 18.3 overs. Two wickets for Behrendorf in this over.
Wicket! Axar Patel (54 off 25) tries to hit Behrendorf over the square leg boundary but failed to connect it well. Arshad Khan takes a good catch. DC - 165/6 in 18.1 overs.

SIX!! Axar Patel hits Jason Behrendorff for back-to-back maximums. The first one was dispatched over long-on and later Suryakumar Yadav misjudged the ball near boundary ropes and fumbles. The ball crosses the boundary ropes for a maximum and SKY is injured as well. Rohit Sharma looks unhappy!
Third consecutive half-century for captain David Warner in the IPL. This is his 58th IPL fifty from Mr Consistent. He needs to carry his bat if Delhi Capitals want to post a respectable total.
Wicket! Lalit Yadav fails to read the googly from Piyush Chawla and his defence was breached by a beauty. Lalit departs for 2 and Delhi Capitals are 98/5.
Wicket! Delhi Capitals suffers their fourth jolt as big-hitting Rovman Powell (4) gets trapped in Piyush Chawla's spin web. DC - 86/4 in 10.4 overs. DC have lost 3 wickets in a space of 13 balls so far.
Wicket! Not a memorable debut for Yash Dhull as he departs for 2. He tried to hit Rilee Meredith over on-side and gets caught by Nehal Wadhera at deep square leg. DC - 81/3 in 9.5 overs.
Wicket! Manish Pandey was looking to hit leg-spinner Piyush Chawla over long-off for a maximum but failed to time it well and gets caught in the deep by Jason Behrendorff for 26 off 18 balls. DC - 77/2

Despite losing Prithvi Shaw early in the innings, Delhi Capitals have reached 75 for the loss of that solitary wicket in 8 overs. Warner - 27* | Pandey - 26* are have shared a 42-run partnership off 27 balls.
Back-to-back boundaries from Manish Pandey's bat against Hrithik Shokeen and with that Delhi Capitals reach 51/1 after 6 overs. Decent start for Delhi in powerplay.
Prithvi Shaw (15 off 10 balls) is unlucky. Got a ball which had 'hit-me' written all over it but couldn't time it well and Cameron Green gets caught at square leg. Hrithik Shokeen provides the breakthrough for Mumbai. DC - 34/1
Good start for Delhi Capitals in the powerplay as openers David Warner and Prithvi Shaw help the team reach 19/0 after 2 overs. The body language of DC batters looks confident tonight.
