Gautam Gambhir's wish granted, Former KKR pacer set to become the next Bowling Coach of India

By MyKhel Staff

The Indian team is set to get their permanent bowling coach after the ongoing Sri Lanka series. As per reports, BCCI has granted Gautam Gambhir's wish and the final member of the coaching staff may be sealed by the Bangladesh Test series.

India went with Sairaj Bahutule as the bowling coach for the Sri Lanka tour. Ryan ten Doeschate and Abhishek Nayar were the assistant coaches with Gambhir while T Dilip travelled as the fielding coach.

Although Dilip is likely to remain in his post, Bahutule's duty will over with the conclusion of the Sri Lanka series. As per reports, former South Africa pacer Morne Morkel is set to be appointed as the permanent bowling coach.

Morkel, who played under Gautam Gambhir in KKR and then worked with the India head coach at LSG, is the frontrunner for the job. Gambhir recommended Morkel's name and the Indian coach has got his wish.

Morne Morkel to be India Bowling Coach

Although BCCI were apprehensive of foreign coaches, the appointments of Ten Doeschate and now Morkel have been possible solely because of Gambhir's pursuance. As per a report from Cricbuzz, the former South Africa pacer will join the Indian team as bowling coach ahead of the Bangladesh Test series in September.

Bahutule was appointed for the interim role and the former India spinner is likely to be relieved. But Morkel's appointment has already raised a few questions regarding the spin department. None of the coaching staff in Gambhir's team have a strong grip on spin bowling, which may lead to another separate appointment of a spin-bowling coach.

The Indian cricket team has made a strong start under Gambhir's tenure as they have already wrapped up the T20I series against Sri Lanka. With the ODI series on the horizon, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have also reached Sri Lanka ahead of the match.
