New Delhi, June 23: Former India captain Anil Kumble said he's happy to be back in the Indian dressing room after he was appointed as India's new Head Coach for a period of 1 year, by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), on June 23.

It's a great to be back in Indian dressing room in a different role: Anil Kumble

"It's a great honour to be back in Indian dressing room in a different role," said Kumble told media persons after the formal announcement was made by BCCI president Anurag Thakur.

He always led the country's bowling attack from the front but Anil Kumble believes that as the new head coach of the Indian cricket team, his role will be in the "background" as it is the players who "come first".

Speaking about the responsibility and upcoming challenges, Kumble said, "It's a huge responsibility, ready to take this role. Coaches come later, it's always players first. Strategy will be to win."

"Have a short and long plan for the upcoming series, but I cannot plan alone; need players to pitch in," Kumble further said.

The selection of the coach was made based on the recommendation by the Cricket Advisory Committee comprising Tendulkar, Ganguly and Laxman.

"This is a great time for Indian cricket. I have played for long with Sourav, Sachin, VVS and Rahul is also guiding the junior team. The five of us share wonderful relation on the field and off it as well. I am looking forward to working with them," Kumble spoke fondly of the 'Golden Period' of Indian cricket.

"Need to sit down with Sourav, Sachin, Laxman and Dravid and need to do what is best for Indian cricket."

'Jumbo' Kumble's first assignment will be the tour of the Caribbean where India play 4 Tests from next month (July) against the West Indies.
