IPL 2026: How DC vs PBKS Became One of IPL’s Greatest Matches in 529-Run Thriller

IPL 2026 DC vs PBKS: Some matches produce results. Some produce performances. And then there are matches like these - ones that rewrite record books, strain disbelief, and leave everyone in the ground wondering what they just witnessed.

Delhi Capitals vs Punjab Kings at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Saturday (April 25) was all of that and more. A total of 529 runs were scored across 38.5 overs. Fifteen sixes were hit in the powerplay alone. An individual score of 152 went in vain. And a target that would have seemed impossible at the toss was chased down with seven balls to spare. This is the match, by the numbers.

How DC vs PBKS became IPL 2026 s most historic match

KL Rahul Posts Highest Score From An Indian In IPL

KL Rahul's innings was the centerpiece of the afternoon - a knock of such staggering quality that it deserved to win a match, not lose one. The right-handed batter from Karnataka became the first Indian to score 150-plus in IPL history. His 152* is also only the third-highest individual score in the tournament's history, behind Chris Gayle's 175* and Brendon McCullum's 158*.

Rahul's century came off just 47 balls - his sixth IPL hundred. In the powerplay alone, he scored 35 off 16 balls at a strike rate above 200. He hit boundaries for fun, scoring 118 runs in fours and sixes - the most boundary runs ever hit in an innings for Delhi Capitals, surpassing Rishabh Pant's previous record of 102.

He also surpassed MS Dhoni during his innings to move higher on the all-time IPL run-scorers list. It was a performance for the ages - against his former franchise, in front of a packed home crowd. And it still ended on the losing side.

Rahul and Rana Record Partnership: 220 Runs (second wicket)

After Pathum Nissanka fell early for 11, Rahul and Nitish Rana proceeded to dismantle one of the IPL's best bowling attacks with a stand that will be remembered long after the result fades.

Their 220-run partnership for the second wicket is the second-best partnership in IPL history. It is also the highest partnership ever recorded for any wicket by Delhi Capitals, eclipsing the previous record of 189 between David Warner and Naman Ojha.

Rana's contribution was 91 off 44 balls - four short of a deserved century - featuring 11 fours and four sixes. One over off Xavier Bartlett cost 28 runs, with Rana hitting 6, 4, 4, 4, 4, 6 in succession. Rana was eventually dismissed for 91 when Shreyas Iyer held a sharp one-handed catch at long-on.

Delhi Capitals Post Mammoth 264/2

The total was built on an extraordinary powerplay. DC scored 68/1 in six overs - their highest powerplay score in IPL 2026 - with Rahul already at 35 off 16. The final score of 264/2 made this only the second-highest total ever in an IPL match, with 529 runs scored across the contest.

Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya Post 116 Runs in Powerplay

If Rahul and Rana lit the fuse in the first innings, Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya detonated the bomb in the second. The PBKS openers put up 116/0 in six overs - the highest powerplay score ever recorded in a T20 run chase, and the second-highest powerplay score in IPL history overall. Only SRH's 125/0 against Delhi Capitals at this very ground in 2024 stands above it.

Prabhsimran was the aggressor in chief. He reached his fifty off 18 balls and scored 71 runs in the powerplay alone before eventually being dismissed for 76. Arya contributed a rapid 43. Between them, they gave PBKS a platform so commanding that even conceding three wickets in the middle overs could not derail the chase.

The highest successful chase in T20 history: 265

This is the headline stat that will outlast everything else. Punjab Kings chased 265 to win with seven balls remaining - the highest successful run chase in the history of T20 cricket. PBKS had previously held this record themselves, having chased down 262 against Kolkata Knight Riders in 2024. The previous all-format record was South Africa's 259 against West Indies in 2023. Both were broken here, in Delhi, on a hot April afternoon.

Highest successful T20 chases:

  • 265 - PBKS vs DC, Delhi, 2026
  • 262 - PBKS vs KKR, IPL 2024
  • 259 - South Africa vs West Indies, 2023

DC vs PBKS: The dropped catches that changed everything

For all the batting brilliance on display, the decisive moment of the match came in the field. With PBKS wobbling at three wickets down in the middle overs, DC had the match within their grasp. Impact substitute Karun Nair then dropped Shreyas Iyer twice in successive overs - first a regulation catch, then a sitter - to hand the PBKS captain a second life, and then a third.

Iyer made them pay in full. He finished unbeaten on 71 off 36 balls. Together with Shashank Singh, he saw PBKS over the line with an over to spare.

IPL 2026: What it means?

With this win, PBKS have six wins from seven matches - one game was abandoned due to rain - and sit firmly at the top of the table. Business Standard They are a team playing with genuine conviction. Their powerplay batting is the most destructive in the competition and Shreyas Iyer's captaincy continues to set the tone.

For Delhi, the afternoon offered an extraordinary individual performance and a collective heartbreak. Rahul's 152* was the kind of innings that wins matches nine times out of ten. On Saturday, it was not enough.

The match also ended on a worrying note for DC, with Lungi Ngidi taken to hospital after suffering a blow to the back of the head during the chase. Further updates on his condition are awaited.
