ICC has apologised after making a major goof-up by wrongly crowning India the number one ranked Test time in the world on Wednesday. The global cricketing governing body fixed the error after a few hours and reinstated Australia as the number one ranked team in the longest format of the game.

Major ICC goof-up

The goof-up showed India as the number one ranked Test side with 115 points and Australia second with 111 points. After fixing the error, Australia's point tally has climbed to 126 points. Rohit Sharma's men are 11 points behind Pat Cummins' men.

Fans had erupted in joy on realising that India have become the number one ranked team across formats. The Men in Blue attained the number one spot in ODIs after beating New Zealand 3-0 in the home series in January. The T20I numero uno position had come last year after a thumping series win against West Indies.

“The ICC acknowledges, for a short period of time on February 15, 2023 that, due to a technical error, India were erroneously displayed as the No.1 Test team on the ICC website,” it said.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused," ICC added.

India will have a chance to take another shot at the ICC rankings by aiming to take a 2-0 lead with a win in the upcoming Delhi Test which starts from February 17. The hosts defeated Australia by an innings and 132 runs in the first Test in Nagpur. The third and the fourth Test of the series will be played in Indore and Ahmedabad respectively.

India chasing WTC final berth

India are also an eyeing a spot in the final of the World Test Championship (WTC) 2021-23 final. A 3-0 or 3-1 win in the series will ensure India a spot in the summit clash which is slated to be played at Kennington Oval from June 7.
