ICC Cricket World Cup 2023: Netherlands add Somerset assistant coach Shane Burger to their coaching staff

Hyderabad, Sep 17: Shane Burger, a former chief coach of Scotland, has now become part of the Netherlands cricket team's coaching personnel for the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. "Adding Shane, a seasoned coach, to our team is a great move," comments Ryan Cook, the coach for the Netherlands' team.

During Burger's four-year tenure in Scotland, he became well acquainted with most Dutch players and their management. "Being invited to support them is both a privilege and an honour," remarks Burger, currently an assistant coach at Somerset.

"I don't intend to downplay other teams and players I've been part of, but this squad has an edge. Their experience from the Super League is substantial which was demonstrated in the qualifiers. I am eager to work with them in the approaching World Cup," Burger added further.

Ryan Cook voices his enthusiasm about Burger joining their crew. "His all-embracing expertise and international-level coaching experience is a boon. Having collaborated with Shane in different roles over the years, I am aware of the assets he can add to the team. His keen understanding of cricket, outstanding work discipline, and values dovetail with the ethos we have fostered within the group."

Born on August 31, 1982, in Johannesburg, Shane Burger, a cricket all-rounder, played for KwaZulu-Natal-Inland professionally from 2001 to 2015, scored 3,839 First Class runs (averaging 33.67) and claimed 171 First Class wickets (averaging 24.47).

In 2019, he ascended as the head coach of the Scottish men's team, steering them through two T20 World Cups. Since 2023, Burger has been serving as an assistant coach in Somerset, England.

The encompassing coaching body for the Netherlands squad during the ICC Cricket World Cup will include Ryan Cook (chief Coach), Heino Kuhn, Ryan van Niekerk, and Shane Burger (assistant trainers).

The Dutch World Cup group is currently practising at their Amstelveen headquarters and will depart on September 19 for the final part of their preparation at Bengaluru and Alur Stadium. They will play two matches against a Karnataka State Cricket team on September 25 and 27.

The squad will move to Trivandrum, marking the official commencement of the World Cup, with warmup matches scheduled against Australia (30 September) and India (3 October). Their first game of the World Cup is slated for October 6 against Pakistan in Hyderabad.
