This strategic move positions the Nassau County ground, located merely 25 kilometres east of Manhattan, as the epicentre of a historical cricketing event. The pitch, a vital component of any cricket match, is receiving special attention. Adelaide Oval's curator, Damian Hough, renowned for his expertise in crafting drop-in pitches, is leading the endeavour.

Under Hough's guidance, pitches are currently being cultivated in Florida, ensuring the playing surface for the T20 World Cup games in the USA will be nothing short of professional standard.

The design team behind this ambitious project is Populous, renowned for creating some of the most iconic stadia worldwide, including the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad and the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London. In New York, they are the architect of record for both the New York Yankees and New York Mets.

Temporary Yet World-Class Facilities

The decision to opt for temporary infrastructure over a permanent one is rooted in practicality and experience, as explained by Chris Tetley, ICC's Event Director. The temporary nature of the facilities allows for swift assembly and disassembly, a common practice in global sports events.

Remarkably, some of this infrastructure will be repurposed from the Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix, showcasing the ICC's commitment to efficiency and sustainability. Tetley's research underscores the enormous potential of the American cricket market, with an estimated 30 million fans and a ranking as the third-largest broadcast market globally.

This information drives the comprehensive planning and execution of the project, which includes levelling the outfield, installing drainage systems, and ensuring the pitches and training facilities meet international standards.

Unveiling the Timelines and Preparations

The groundwork for this ambitious project kicks off in February, with construction phases extending through early May. The drop-in pitches will then be transported from Florida, and the final preparations, including grass growth and testing phases, will continue until the end of May. Tetley expresses confidence in meeting the outlined timelines to ensure the venue is match-ready.

Despite the excitement around the new venue, it is uncharted territory for international cricket matches. To mitigate any potential issues, the ICC plans to conduct practice games and thorough systems testing before the first ball is bowled.

Legacy and Future Use of the Facilities

While the structures will be dismantled post-tournament, their legacy will be a top-quality outfield. Discussions are underway with Major League Cricket (MLC) to potentially use the Nassau County facility for their second season, which could extend the impact of the ICC's investment. Even after removing the drop-in pitches, an artificial surface will be left behind to maintain and be suitable for future cricketing events.
