New Delhi, Feb 15: India's premier spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja made big gains in the latest ICC Test Bowler Rankings following their joint destruction against Australia in the opening Test.
Both Ashwin and Jadeja returned with impressive fifers in the Nagpur Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023, which Team India won by an innings and 132 runs.
Ashwin has closed the gap with top-ranked Pat Cummins and ranks second in the latest ICC Test Bowler Rankings for men. Jadeja - who was adjudged the player of the match in his comeback Test - also jumped higher.
The spin twins combined to pick up 15 wickets in the first Test between the two leading nations in the current cycle of the ICC World Test Championship.
The tall Tamil Nadu off-spinner ensured India wrapped up the match in style before tea on the third day and he picked up 5/37 in the second innings to go with 3/42 in the first innings of the match.
With his superlative effort, the 36-year-old climbed to the second spot in the Test bowler rankings. He's only 21 rating points adrift of Australia captain Pat Cummins from making a return to the No.1 spot for the first time since 2017.
While Ashwin stepped up in what turned out to be the last session of the Test, Jadeja - who was making an international comeback after an injury layoff of five months - returned with 5/47, including the prized wickets of Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne, as India folded the Aussies for 177 in their first innings.

Jadeja then took 2/34 in the second innings to partner with Ashwin as the spin twins quickly dismissed Australia's top seven batters and left them reeling at 67/7 on the way to being all out for just 91.
Gudakesh Motie, the emerging West Indies spinner, announced his arrival on the big stage with his haul of 19 wickets in two Tests against Zimbabwe. He has surged 77 places to be ranked 46th after only three Tests.
For his match-winning century in Nagput, India captain Rohit Sharma rose from 10th to 8th in the ICC Men's Test Batting Rankings. The Mumbaikar came to the crease and made the wicket look all but tame with an assured 120 that set the tone for the rest of the match.
In stark contrast to Rohit's knock, the Australian opening duo of David Warner and Usman Khawaja paid the price for each being dismissed cheaply twice.
Warner has fallen six places to 20th after his scores of 1 and 10, while Khawaja has dropped two spots to 10th after only making 1 and 5 in the first Test against India.
India all-rounder Axar Patel - who was equally good with the bat and ball in Nagpur Test - has jumped six places to 7th in the ICC Men's Test All-Rounder Rankings. He walked into the middle at a tense 240/7 but his patient knock of 84, for his highest score in Tests, helped India touch the 400-run mark in the first innings and ensure visitors had a monumental lead of 200-plus in the third innings which they couldn't overhaul.
Kraigg Brathwaite is another Test captain to rise in the batting rankings as the West Indies opener moved four spots to 21st after notching 182 in the first Test against Zimbabwe.
The West Indies skipper's opening partner Tagenarine Chanderpaul made an even bigger leap, as the 26-year-old climbed 28 spots to 58th after his huge 207* in the same Test against Zimbabwe.
