IND vs AUS: India coach Gautam Gambhir has reinforced the importance of keeping dressing room discussions private, especially as India prepares for the fifth and final Test against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG).
Trailing the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2-1 after a humbling 184-run defeat at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), India has its sights set on levelling the series and boosting their chances of qualifying for the World Test Championship (WTC) final.

In a candid pre-match press conference on Thursday, Gambhir disclosed that he had "honest" conversations with the players, emphasising that performance remains the sole criterion for retaining a place in the team. "Indian cricket will be in safe hands till honest people stay in the dressing room," Gambhir stated. "Only thing that keeps you in the dressing room is performance. There were honest words, and honesty is important." BCCI To Sack Gautam Gambhir After Champions Trophy 2025? Report Makes Huge Claim
The former India opener also dismissed rumours of discord within the team. "Debates between coach and player should remain in the dressing room. Stern words were exchanged, but they were just reports, not the truth," he clarified.
Gambhir revealed that he has not engaged in individual discussions with senior players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma beyond strategising for upcoming matches. "Every individual knows what areas they need to work on. Our only conversation has been about how to win Test matches," he said.
Both Kohli and Sharma are under scrutiny due to their dip in form. Adding to the speculation, reports suggest that Rohit Sharma might announce his retirement from Test cricket following the SCG Test unless India secures a spot in the WTC Final.
India's preparations for the New Year Test have been hit by a setback, with pacer Akash Deep ruled out due to a stiff back. Gambhir did not disclose a replacement, leaving room for speculation about India's final XI.
Captain Rohit Sharma wasn't part of the slip cordon at the practice at the SCG. Rishabh Pant (wk), Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Yashasvi Jaiswal were part of the new-look slip cordon triggering speculation on Rohit's availability. The head coach also remained silent on captain Rohit Sharma's availability in the fifth and final rubber on the tour.
