IND vs AUS: Rohit Sharma or KL Rahul? Who Should Open With Yashasvi Jaiswal for Rest of the Series?

By MyKhel Staff

IND vs AUS: India's encouraging performance in the second innings of the first Test against Australia at Perth has led to a rare "good headache" for the team management.

KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal's impressive 100-run opening stand ended a two-decade drought for century partnerships by Indian openers in Australia. However, with skipper Rohit Sharma set to return from paternity leave for the second Test in Adelaide, the team faces a tough decision on its opening combination.

In the build-up to the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, India's opening slot was seen as its weak link. Backup opener Shubman Gill was ruled out with injury, and Abhimanyu Easwaran failed to make a case in tour games. But Rahul and Jaiswal, under pressure to deliver, provided stability in Perth, with Jaiswal's fluent half-century complemented by Rahul's steady support.

Their partnership, which grew to 150 runs at the time of writing, has sparked a debate about whether KL Rahul should continue alongside Jaiswal, particularly given the latter's rapid rise as a dependable Test opener. However, Rohit Sharma's return complicates matters. As captain and one of India's most accomplished batters, Rohit is undroppable.

Yet, his recent opening partnership with Jaiswal during the 3-0 home loss to New Zealand raised concerns, with the pair struggling to build momentum. Rohit's patchy form during that series contrasts with the solidity Rahul and Jaiswal displayed in their Perth stand.

While this selection dilemma looms, cricketing greats Ravi Shastri and Wasim Akram, on commentary for the official broadcasters, offered a pragmatic perspective. "It's a good headache to have. Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, all will be back," they remarked, emphasising the depth in India's batting options. They avoided diving too deep into the topic, calling it a "headache for later."

Adding to the intrigue are reports of disagreements between Rohit Sharma and coach Gautam Gambhir on certain team decisions. Gambhir might lean toward continuity with the Rahul-Jaiswal combination, while Rohit's leadership makes his inclusion non-negotiable. With India trailing 1-0 in the series, the decision could define their approach to regaining the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Ultimately, the management must tread carefully, balancing form and leadership while ensuring stability at the top. Whether it's Rahul-Jaiswal or Rohit-Jaiswal, the right decision could set the tone for the rest of the series in Australia.
