IND vs BAN: Team India's Victory In Kanpur Test Highlights Rohit Sharma & Co's Hunger To Be The Best

IND vs BAN: At the end of day four, India's new bowling coach, Morne Morkel, captured the essence of Test cricket perfectly: "The key always in Test match cricket is, can you create pressure, can you bowl well in partnerships? If you can do that for a long period of time, you'll get results."

Morkel's words were a prophetic summary of how India's bowlers orchestrated a remarkable turnaround in the Kanpur Test against Bangladesh. What seemed destined for a rain-affected draw transformed into a gripping victory, as India's bowlers turned the tide with sustained pressure and relentless accuracy.

IND vs BAN Team India s Victory In Kanpur Test Highlights Rohit Sharma amp amp Co s Hunger For Win

Rain Dominates, But So Does India

The Kanpur Test saw two full days washed out by rain, leaving only 35 overs possible on day one. However, despite the weather interruptions, India took full advantage of the time they had. After dismissing Bangladesh for 233 in their first innings, the hosts responded with aggressive batting, racing to 285/9 in just 35 overs on day four, ensuring they could set up a result.

The approach sent a clear message - India was playing for the win as the World Test Championships points were on the line. Senior spinner Ravichandran Ashwin reflected on the mindset in the dressing room after Bangladesh's first innings. He revealed that skipper Rohit Sharma had one thing in mind-victory.

"When we gathered for a small huddle, Rohit mentioned that we were going to go hammer and tongs, try to make 400 runs in 50 overs, and then bowl them out for less than 200," Ashwin said. Rohit's aggressive intent was contagious. "Rohit walked out and tanked the first ball for a six, and that set the tone for the team. You have 50 runs off the first three overs, there's no looking back after that," Ashwin added.

India's batters adopted a T20-like approach, showing no fear of failure as they aimed for quick runs, setting up a thrilling finish with a 52-run lead going into day five.

India's Bowlers Deliver a Masterclass

Bangladesh resumed day five at 27/2, with a monumental task of batting all through the day to salvage a draw. India needed to take the remaining eight wickets quickly to force a victory.

Ashwin provided the initial breakthrough, dismissing Mominul Haque for just 2, but Bangladesh fought back. Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto and opener Shadman Islam built a solid 55-run partnership, threatening to take the game towards a draw.

However, Ravindra Jadeja's introduction after the drinks break changed the game as the left-arm spinner broke through Shanto's defence and from there, the floodgates opened.

Bangladesh's middle order wilted under pressure, and despite a gritty fifty from Shadman Islam and some resistance from Mushfiqur Rahim, their fate was sealed. The visitors were bowled out for a mere 146 in just 47 overs in the second innings, leaving India a modest target of 95 runs.

India wasted no time in chasing down the target, achieving the win with more than 45 overs to spare, despite losing three wickets along the way. The match, which saw several batting records re-written by the Indians or created on some occasions, will go down as one of the finest wins at home in the longer format.

Morkel's Philosophy Pays Off

Morkel's emphasis on sustained pressure and bowling in partnerships was evident throughout the final two days. "You can have the best-laid plans, but if you can't execute them for a long time, you're going to fall short," Morkel had said earlier in the match. India's bowlers did just that, sticking to their plans and executing with precision to dismantle Bangladesh's batting lineup.

The win was a testament to India's adaptability, resilience, and aggressive approach under new captain Rohit Sharma and coach Gautam Gambhir. It marked a significant victory in their first series together, setting the tone for what could be a formidable partnership going forward.

A Bright Start for the New Captain-Coach Duo

Rohit Sharma and Gautam Gambhir have begun their leadership partnership on a high note, with this Test win demonstrating their shared vision for India's aggressive and result-oriented cricket. Rohit's bold captaincy, combined with Gambhir's guidance and Morkel's tactical brilliance, promises an exciting future for Indian cricket in the Test arena.

As the Kanpur Test comes to a close, the Indian team's stunning dominating performance in all departments of the game will be remembered for years and long may this winning attitude continue, for the upcoming challenges, especially the tour down under, will test this team in more ways than one.
