IND vs NZ 1st Test: New Zealand End 36-Year Wait with Historic Win Against India; Sarfaraz-Pant Heroics In Vain

Bengaluru, Oct 20: The New Zealand cricket team defeated India by 8 wickets in the opening Test match at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Sunday (October 20), ending a 36-year wait for a Test victory on Indian soil.

The last time the Kiwis managed this feat was in 1988 when current India captain Rohit Sharma was only 18 months old. This win will be remembered as one of the most impressive performances by a visiting side in India over the past decade.

New Zealand end 36-year wait for Test win on Indian soil

New Zealand chased down the target of 107 in 27.4 overs, with Rachin Ravindra (39*) and Will Young (45*) steering the team home through an unbeaten 72-run partnership for the third wicket.

The chase, while seemingly straightforward, had its tense moments. The Kiwis lost their captain Tom Latham for a duck in the first over of the fifth day, with Jasprit Bumrah delivering a sharp two-ball finish to the over from the previous evening.

Devon Conway contributed a gritty 17 before falling to Bumrah, with India successfully overturning the on-field umpire's decision on review.

However, Young and Ravindra - who had already made a significant impact with his century in the first innings - calmly took control. They denied the Indian bowlers any further breakthroughs and maintained pressure on the hosts.

With only 107 runs to defend, India's spinners, Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav, tried to create opportunities, but the Kiwi batters played with composure, finding boundaries at crucial moments and preventing the bowlers from settling into a rhythm. Ravindra - who has his roots in Garden City - was named Player of the Match for his all-round performance.

The exceedingly talented young left-handed batter scored 134 off 157 deliveries after Conway's 91 in the first innings, to put their team in the driver's seat after bowlers put up a show to skittle the Indians out for 46, their lowest innings total at home.

A key moment that symbolised India's fading hopes was Jadeja's dropped return catch of Young when New Zealand were at 88/2. Known as one of the safest fielders in the game, Jadeja's rare mistake suggested that the shoulders in the Indian camp had slumped, as it was the kind of chance he would typically grab on almost every occasion.

Where India Lost the match?

New Zealand's win was well-deserved, though India showed commendable resilience in the second innings after a disastrous batting performance in the first, where they were bundled out for just 46 runs.

The seeds of the defeat were sown on day 2, when captain Rohit Sharma chose to bat first, misjudging the pitch conditions after the entire opening day was washed out.

In their second innings, India put up a much stronger display, fighting back from a massive 356-run deficit. Contributions from Rohit and Virat Kohli, along with Sarfaraz Khan's brilliant 150 and Rishabh Pant's 99, helped India reach 462.

Sarfaraz Khan-Rishabh Pant Partnership Revived India in 2nd innings

Sarfaraz and Pant shared a vital 177-run partnership for the fourth wicket, putting pressure back on New Zealand on day 4. However, the loss of both set batsmen shortly after the second new ball was taken triggered a dramatic collapse, with India losing seven wickets for just 62 runs.

This sudden downturn meant that India only managed a lead of 106, setting the stage for New Zealand's chase. India's inability to defend such a low total on home soil brought back memories of their last successful defence of a 107-run target, back in 2004 against Australia at the Wankhede Stadium.

In that game, spinners Harbhajan Singh and Murali Kartik turned the match in India's favour. Interestingly, Gautam Gambhir, now India's head coach, made his Test debut in that match.
But in the modern game, where conditions and strategies have evolved significantly, replicating such a feat is a far more challenging task.

Team India Face Must-Win Scenario in Pune

With the defeat in IND vs NZ 1st Test, India finds themselves trailing 0-1 in the three-match series. The team will need to regroup quickly as the second Test begins in just four days in Pune. The next two matches, to be played in Pune and Mumbai, are critical for India to bounce back, especially with World Test Championship points on the line.

The hosts will need to address their batting woes and ensure they don't repeat the mistakes from the Bengaluru Test. A stronger showing with the bat and more effective use of home conditions will be key if India hopes to turn the series around and stay competitive in the race for World Test Championship qualification.
