IND vs ZIM: Sikandar Raza Backs 'Generational Talent' Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Says India-Zimbabwe T20I Series Won't Be One-Sided

Harare, July 22: Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza has predicted an entertaining contest against India in the upcoming three-match T20I series, insisting that both teams have an equal opportunity to win despite India's reputation as the reigning world champions.

The series, scheduled from July 23 to July 26 at the Harare Sports Club, will also mark another important chapter in India's transition under new T20I captain Shreyas Iyer, who will be chasing his maiden bilateral series victory as skipper.

Having lost back-to-back series against Ireland and England, the Indian T20I side under the leadership of Iyer and coach Gautam Gambhir is facing a lot of criticism. A relatively younger and new-look Indian side, also the reigning world T20 champions, were outclassed in every department.

Despite being ranked second in the latest T20I team rankings, the Men in Blue will have their tasks cut out down under against Zimbabwe - who are ranked 12. However, they don't look like as clear favourites due to their recent form.

Speaking on JioStar, Raza - the 40-year-old all-rounder - dismissed suggestions that India would start overwhelming favourites and instead backed Zimbabwe to challenge the visitors throughout the series.

'Both Countries Have an Equal Chance'

While acknowledging India's immense depth, Raza believes Zimbabwe's steady progress in T20 cricket makes the contest far more competitive than many expect.

"We have a long-term plan and a long-term vision that we will carry forward to prepare everyone for the next T20 World Cup," Raza said on JioStar.

"As far as winning and losing are concerned, I think both countries have an equal chance of winning the series. India is going through a transition, and to some extent, you'll see a bit of transition happening for Zimbabwe as well."

The experienced all-rounder expects closely fought matches in Harare.

"Zimbabwe has been playing very consistent and entertaining cricket. The series will definitely be very entertaining. I don't see it being a one-sided series."

Raza Labels Vaibhav Sooryavanshi a 'Generational Talent'

One of the biggest talking points ahead of the series is the continued rise of 15-year-old sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who is rapidly becoming one of India's brightest young prospects.

Raza urged fans and experts not to judge the teenager too early, describing him as a once-in-a-generation talent. "Vaibhav is a supremely talented cricketer. If a 15-year-old kid is playing international cricket, criticising him after just two or three matches isn't justified."

He also highlighted the importance of nurturing such exceptional talent carefully.

"If he is managed and handled well, I think Vaibhav could be a generational talent. What he has done over the last year, for India Under-19, and making his international debut at such a young age are no small feats. Vaibhav is special."

India's Aggressive Batting the Biggest Threat

India's fearless approach with the bat has become one of the defining features of their T20 cricket, and Raza admitted that containing the visitors' batting line-up will be Zimbabwe's biggest challenge.

"India play a very aggressive brand of cricket, and they take the game away from you."

However, he also pointed out that such an attacking philosophy comes with its own risks. "With high-risk cricket, sometimes it doesn't come off. When that happens, the other team has a chance. But the biggest challenge will be stopping their batters because of how quickly they score runs and can basically bat you out of the game."

Strong Cricketing Ties Between India and Zimbabwe

Raza also praised the long-standing relationship between the two cricket boards, saying tours involving India continue to benefit Zimbabwean cricket immensely.

"India has been a great friend to Zimbabwe cricket. From the players' point of view, it's about the growth of the players and the exposure they get from playing against the world champions."

The Zimbabwe captain added that he personally relishes competing against the very best in world cricket.

India's Talent Pool Sets Them Apart

According to Raza, India's vast talent reservoir and well-established domestic structure continue to produce world-class cricketers year after year.

"India has a system that has definitely helped some of these talented cricketers excel."

He also believes the rise of franchise cricket has reduced the gap between nations, particularly in the shortest format.

"The gap might be very big in Test cricket, and it might still be big in ODI cricket. But as far as T20 cricket is concerned, the gap is narrowing. It's such a volatile format that any country can challenge anybody."

With both teams preparing for the next T20 World Cup cycle, the three-match series promises to offer valuable insights into emerging talent while also testing India's depth away from home.
