'Dengue threat' looms large over Kanpur Test, India-NZ match could witness empty stands

The BCCI has decided to invite all the former India captains to celebrate the occasion of country's '500th Test match' starting on September 22.

But, the historic Test match might witness empty stands as the threat of dengue and viral fever looms large over the city of Kanpur and the stadium is also under threat of vector-borne diseases.

If the threat persists then certainly the gala event as well as the first Test match of the three-match series could turn out to be a damp squib for the BCCI.

As per a news daily's report, Kanpur Senior Superintendent of Police, Shalabh Mathur was quoted as saying, "Around 300 police personnel are undergoing treatment for viral fever and dengue, and these include station incharges and constables."

There are reports of huge pile of waste accumulated near the stadium that was cleaned only after UPCA secretary Rajeev Shukla asked the authorities for cleaning.

As per reports, the fogging hasn't been done around the stadium, which increases the chances of vector-borne diseases.

But, there is no denying the fact that both cricket association as well as the cricket board would be aware of such threats.

Thus, one can expect that the board would ask the concerned authorities to escallate the process of making the stadium safe for public as well as for the players.
Carelessness of any sort would not only pose a threat over players' health but also bring embarrassment to the board and country.
