Indian bowlers dominated the first two sessions as they bagged five Australian wickets and kept things tight for the visitors, but the Steve Smith and his boys gave tough fight to the Indians in the third session and took the advantage away from the hosts.

It wasn't a good day for the Indian bowlers, in terms of getting wickets, as they managed to get only six wickets in the 90 overs they bowled.

India's front-line spinner Ravichandran Ashwin had a forgettable outing, for he got just one wicket despite bowling whopping 35 overs.

Left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja was the pick of Indian bowlers who grabbed 3/49 from 16 overs he delivered. Commentators, however, felt he was under utilised by the skipper despite getting maximum wickets for the side.

Pacers Ishant Sharma (1/39) and Umesh Yadav (1/57) got one wickets apiece.

For the visitors, Matt Renshaw (60) and Shaun Marsh (66) were the top scorers. They stiched crucial partnerships at regular partnerships to take advantage. Mitchell Starc (14 not out) and Matthew Wade (25 not out) will resume Australia's batting on Monday (Day 3).

20-year-old Renshaw impressed all with his gritty 60-run-knock. The left-handed batsman played 196 balls after he was tricked by Ravindra Jadeja and stumped by Wriddhiman Saha.

Peter Handscomb was dismissed by the duo of Jadeja and Ashwin. Ashwin took a superb single-handed diving catch to give hosts much needed breakthrough.

Earlier, the visitors lost three wickets in the post-lunch session as they reached 163/5 in 80 overs at tea.

India earned the prized wickets of David Warner (33) who was bowled by hosts' leading wicket-taker Ravichandran Ashwin. Ashwin produced a beauty to remove a well set Warner early on.

But ever since Warner's dismissal, Australian skipper Steve Smith (8) and opener Matt Renshaw (40 batting) almost eluded the Indian side for another breakthrough at M Chinnaswamy Stadium.

The two put up a 30-run-partnership but it was Ravindra Jadeja who gave hosts their second wicket in the innings by getting Smith caught bat-pad behind the stumps.

India thus dominated the first session of the day as they maintained pressure over visitors and gave runs miserly. Aussies could only manage 47 runs in the 29 overs and lost two wickets in the first session.

This was a great come back by Indians after they were pushed to the wall by the visitors on first day. India spinners as well as pacers kept pressure upon Australian batsmen.

Team India would now be hoping to get the remaining four Australian wickets as soon as possible on Day 3 to keep the lead less. While Australia would be hoping to take lead past 100-150 to put themselves in drivers' seat.

Earlier on Saturday (March 4), India's opening batsman Lokesh Rahul, whose defiant 90 helped the hosts reach a paltry 189 in the first innings.

Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon returned with carreer best figures of 8/50 in 22 overs as the visitors outplayed hosts on the first day.
