India vs Australia, World Cup 2023 Final: As it Happened

Australia captain Pat Cummins won the Toss and decided to bowl first.

It was a fluent start from India with the bat as captain Rohit Sharma gave them a breezy start. But as soon as Rohit Sharma (47 off 31 balls) departed, things changed completely. The dynamics of the match shifted as India struggled to score runs on a sticky, slow pitch. Virat Kohli (54 off 63 balls) and KL Rahul (66 off 107 balls) played their part but the slothness of their innings meant India couldn't capitalize in the big final.

It was an excellent bowling display from the Aussies who managed to contain the Indian batters and India were bundled out for just 240 runs. Mitchell Starc picked up three wickets while Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins had two wickets each to their names.

In the run chase, Australia were troubled early. Mohammed Shami gave an early breakthrough by picking up David Warner, and then Jasprit Bumrah got two quick wickets as Mitchell Marsh and Steve Smith were back in the hut. With Australia reeling at 47 for 3, India were right on top.

But things changed soon as Travis Head started to impose his flamboyance. The southpaw took matters into his own hands and dismantled the robust Indian attack. Marnus Labuschagne was also excellent as the duo stitched a World Cup-winning 4th wicket partnership of 192 runs to take the Aussies home.

Travis Head scored a fantastic unbeaten century, whereas Labuschagne also made a well-compiled half-century. Head scored 137 off just 120 balls, whereas Labuschagne remained unbeaten on 58.

Travis Head Comments

"(Winning feeling) What an amazing day. Just thrilled to be part of it. Very lucky to be here and I was a bit nervous. Marnus was excellent and it was an amazing partnership.

(On his approach) I felt the way Mitch Marsh took the game on, it set the tone and set the energy. The wicket could have gone worse, and that is the reason I went hard. It is going to be an amazing couple of days.

(On Rohit Sharma's Catch) I couldn't imagine getting a hundred, couldn't probably imagine holding onto that one. It was nice to hold on to that catch. You always want to contribute on big stage in front of the full house.

(joining Gilchrist and Ponting) Definitely third on that list, it's a nice one to join, nice to be here and nice to contribute. I'll just tell the boys that I'm looking forward to the reunion."

Player of the Tournament

India batter Virat Kohli got the player of the tournament award for scoring 765 runs. He marked his brilliant campaign with three centuries and six fifties.

India vs Australia, World Cup 2023 Final: What Captains Said

Rohit Sharma (India Captain)

"Honestly the result has not gone our way. We were not good enough today. We tried everything but it wasn't supposed to be. 20-30 runs more would have been good, KL and Kohli were stitching a good partnership and we were looking at 270-280 but we kept losing wickets We didn't bat well enough to put enough runs on the board.

When you have 240 on the board, you want to take wickets but credit to Head and Marnus for putting us out of the game, but I feel the wicket got slightly better to bat under lights. Don't want to give that as an excuse. We didn't put enough runs on the board. Credit to those two guys in the middle for putting up an outstanding partnership."

Pat Cummins (Australia Captain)

"I think we saved our best for the last couple of big players. Came up and were good. We have been batting first pretty much for whole tournament and we thought it was a good night to chase down the target.

(on the pitch) Thought the pitch might get actually get a bit easier later in the game It was a bit slower. It didn't particularly spin as much as I thought It was a slow pitch, so made a couple of decisions around the game.

(on Labuschagne and Head) Magnificent. Marnus with a cool head and Travis does what he does on the biggest stage, showed a lot of character. I was pretty happy throughout the bowling innings. You look around and it is a special moment no matter whatever happened tonight. This year will be remembered for a long, long time and we had a lot of success over the winter and this one peaks it all. At the top of the mountain.
