Colombo, Sep 15: A spirited Bangladesh side registered a historic win in the inconsequential Asia Cup 2023 Super 4 Match against India at R Premadasa Stadium on Friday (September 15).

With an emphatic 6-run win over India - who were the first team to qualify for the final, the Bangladeshi cricket team finished their campaign in the continental showpiece on a positive note.

Chasing a target of 266 in Colombo, Team India had a dismal batting performance despite a gritty century from Shubman Gill. Gill scored 122 off 133 balls in the run chase and was the only silver lining for the Men in Blue in a rather dull batting effort.

Axar Patel tried to keep the Indians in the hunt but his dismissal on the fourth delivery of the 49th over, bowled by Mustafizur Rahman, was fatal for his team as he was the ninth wicket to perish. Mohammed Shami was the last Indian batter to fall in the match while trying to sneak a double. India's entire innings, thus, folded for 259 in 49.5 overs.

Shakib Al Hasan, Winning captain & Player of the Match: [On chances given to youngsters] Yes, we gave the guys a chance who haven't played much. After the last couple of games here, we thought spinners would do well. Today, I went early and had time to spend on the crease. It was a challenging wicket. It was seaming a bit and it got easier when the ball got older.

"[On Mahedi Hasan] It wasn't an easy time to bowl, he came to bowl and got us the breakthrough. He also bowled five overs at the end which is not easy for a spinner. Also, Tanzim bowled well at the start and took two wickets."

"[On team combination] We have got a very good team. A lot of players were injured and some went in and out, which didn't help us. I think we will be a dangerous side in the World Cup."

Rohit Sharma, losing captain: [On five changes in the match] We wanted to give some game time to the guys, keeping the bigger picture in mind. Not compromising on how we wanted to play this game. Get in some players who are likely to play in the World Cup.

[On positives from the game] Axar batted brilliantly but couldn't finish. He showed a lot of character. But credit to the Bangladesh bowlers. (Shubman) Gill's hundred was brilliant. He backs his game, he knows exactly how he wants to play.

"He's pretty clear on what he wants to do for the team. Look at his form over the last year. Pretty solid against the new ball. Works really hard, there's no optional practice for Gill."
