Hyderabad Test, Day 2: Kohli's 204 and Saha's ton extend India's domination

Hyderabad, Feb 10: Another brilliant double hundred from skipper Virat Kohli and a shining century from Wriddhiman Saha enabled hosts India dominate Bangladesh on second day of the one-off Test at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium here on Friday (Feb 10).

Batting in response to India first innings total of 687/6 (declared) Bangladesh were 41/1 at stumps. The visitors lost the wicket of opener Soumya Sarkar in 14 overs.

Pacer Umesh Yadav and captain Kohli's stunning DRS call helped the hosts get the much needed breakthrough at the stroke of stumps, putting visitors on the backfoot further.

Earlier, Kohli declared India's innings at mammoth 687 for the loss of 6 six wickets. Wriddhiman Saha (106 not out) was batting along with Ravindra Jadeja (60*) when skipper Kohli signalled his boys to return. (Day 1 Report)

After resuming the day at a personal score of 111, Kohli completed his career's fourth double hundred immediately after lunch to become first Indian skipper to hit four double tons.

Unbeaten on 191 till the lunch session, Kohli quickly completed his fourth double ton as he surpassed the record set by Australian legend Don Bradman (1930-32) and compatriot Rahul Dravid (2003-4).

Prior to this one-off Test, Kohli's double tons were 200 against the West Indies away in July, 211 vs New Zealand at home in October and 235 against England in December.

He fell after being dismissed with a leg before decision by left-arm spinner Taijul Islam. His innings was studded with 24 fours out of the 246 deliveries he faced.

The wicket, however, didn't come as a relief for the visitors as Saha and Ravichandran Ashwin punished them with a quickfire stand of 74 runs in 15.2 overs.

With the team pushing for a huge score before the declaration, Ashwin made most of the occasion by scoring 34 runs in 45 deliveries.

Ajinkya Rahane (82), who fell 18 short of a well deserved century, was the lone wicket India lost in the first session. Rahane's departure ended the 222-run stand between Kohli and him for the fourth wicket.

Earlier on day 1, Kohli and opener Murali Vijay's scintillating centuries put India in the driver's seat as the hosts posted 356/3 at stumps on the opening day on Thursday (Feb 9).

Kohli with middle-order mainstay Rahane giving him company at the other end when the umpires removed the bails for the day.

Both Kohli and Rahane denied any inroads to the Bangladesh bowlers, who sweated it hard throughout the day on a wicket which gradually slowed down as the innings progressed.

Kohli, who came to the crease at the fall of Pujara, looked set for another big innings when he got off the mark by hitting Mehedi Hassan Miraz for a four on his very first ball.

The 28-year-old Delhi batsman settled in no time, getting the quick singles and twos with Vijay inching towards his individual three-figure mark.

Earlier, Vijay (108) and Cheteshwar Pujara (83) raised a 178-run second-wicket stand to help India recover from the early loss of opener Lokesh Rahul (2).
