India vs Bangladesh: Team India lose to Bangla Tigers After 11 Years in Asia Cup - A Tale of Two Memorable Centuries Going In Vain

Colombo, Sep 15: In an exceptional display of his batting prowess, young India batter Shubman Gill scored a marvellous century in a dead rubber Super Four match of the Asia Cup 2023 against Bangladesh on Friday (September 15).

With his sublime batting performance, Gill - who turned 24 only last week - added yet another brilliant ton in his repertoire to a fantastic 2023. His performance of 121 off 133 deliveries under testing conditions, reflected Gill's consistently high performance in the One Day Internationals (ODIs) in the ongoing 2023.

However, despite Gill's remarkable batting performance, Team India suffered a defeat against Bangladesh by a narrow margin of 6 runs. The loss ended Rohit Sharma-led side's victorious streak in the competition and gave Bangladesh a victory after 11 years in the Asia Cup.

It was the third win for Bangladesh against their mighty neighbours in a multi-national tournament. Their first win against Men in Blue came in the 2007 ODI World Cup. The second win for the Men in Green and Red came at home in the 2012 Asia Cup and the third came in 2023 in Sri Lanka.

Shubman Gill: A Versatile Player

With his distinctive batting style and uncanny ability to tackle the toughest of bowling attacks at utmost ease, Gill, the agile young lad from Punjab, has been carving his niche in international cricket.

Ever since he made his entry into the cricket arena, the right-handed batter has never looked back since then. The year 2023 is no different as Gill continued his rich vein of form, becoming a key member of the Indian cricket team. A future star of Indian cricket, Gill is vital to India's dream of lifting the elusive ICC trophy as they host the ODI World Cup 2023, starting next month at home.

Asia Cup 2023: Shubman Gill's Dismissal Hurt India

Gill - who smashed eight boundaries and five sixes in his knock against Bangladesh - demonstrated an exquisite array of shots and rigorous training. The youngster bared cramps and tough batting conditions to craft his innings under pressure.

However, the spirited performance came to an end, as he fell prey to Bangladeshi spinner Mehadi Hasan's delivery at a critical stage when his team needed 57 more runs to win. His shot selection against Hasan was debatable for he had already hit a maximum on the ball prior to that.

Nevertheless, his knock will be remembered for a long time and a win must have put his performance amongst one of the finest innings under pressure. Gill - who is already being lavished with praise - could have earned the tag of a complete player, had he taken his team deep and finished the game.

Gill's Record-Setting Performance

Despite the defeat, Shubman Gill's performance deserves commendation. He not only scored a spectacular century but further peaked by becoming the first player to complete 1,000 ODI runs. His roaring success in 2023 speaks volumes for his cricketing prowess and determination and promises a sparkling future ahead.

Eery Echoes of the Past

India's Asia Cup 2023 Super match against Bangladesh drew eerie comparisons to a similar match in the 2012 Asia Cup, held in Mirpur. Back then, an Indian opener had reached a century, which ended up in a losing cause.

The legendary Sachin Tendulkar had scored 114 runs off 147 balls against Bangladesh in Mirpur in 2012. It was Tendulkar's historic 49th ODI century and 100th ton, overall, in international cricket. Having posted 289/5, the MS Dhoni-led Indian side failed to defend the total as Bangladesh batters overhauled it with four balls and five wickets to spare.

The loss by a margin of 5 runs was an unexpected defeat and a difficult pill to swallow for a star-studded Indian side, which had the likes of Tendulkar, Gautam Gambhir, Suresh Raina, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Dhoni, Ravindra Jadeja, amongst others. Interestingly, Shakib Al Hasan won the player of the match award on both occasions.

End of a dry spell for Bangladesh

For Bangladesh, their victory against Rohit Sharma-led Indian side didn't just mark the end of an 11-year-long draught. This win also signifies the resurgence of the confident-laden Bangladesh side which had its fair share of setbacks before and during the continental tournament. The victory will emerge as a significant achievement for this Bangladeshi side which has found some brilliant talents in this tournament.

The positives and learnings from their campaign in Asia Cup 2023 will bode well for the Shakib Al Hasan-led side as they now look to give the finishing touches to their World Cup preparations. The young batters and bowlers will look to take the confidence of the Asia Cup to the ICC showpiece starting in India on October 5.
