India vs England: 'Shubman Gill Seemed Under A Lot Of Pressure', remarks Zaheer Khan

IND vs ENG: The first Test between India and England in Hyderabad culminated in a resounding victory for the visiting team, leaving Indian fans shocked as the hosts lost their first-ever red-ball game at this venue.

Despite dominating the first two days, Rohit Sharma and his band faltered in their plans and execution after visitors scripted a fantastic comeback in the second innings, as Ollie Pope and middle-order dropped the anchor.

Anil Kumble Unimpressed With India's Ordinary Effort

Former India captain and bowling great Anil Kumble was unimpressed by Rohit Sharma and his band's ordinary effort in the game. Kumble remarked, "England were brilliant over the last two days. India were pretty ordinary. In the field, you could see that heads were dropping down while fielding."

Kumble also praised debutant Tom Hartley, whose remarkable comeback from a shaky start, left an indelible mark on the match. Hartley's resilience in the face of adversity underscored England's determination and fortitude throughout the game. His pivotal contributions with both bat and ball played a decisive role in England's triumph.

Kumble Applauds England's Grit

"But credit to England, the way they batted, the way they came and bowled. I mean Tom Hartley, debutant, first ball hit for a six and then the first five overs he was going at about seven runs an over. To come back and bat really well, take two wickets in the first innings, and seven in the second and win the match for England was absolutely fantastic. England have done exceptionally well."

In contrast, India's performance left much to be desired, with Kumble highlighting their lacklustre display in the field and a noticeable decline in morale as the match progressed. The turning point, as Kumble noted, came with the dismissals of Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja in the second innings, signalling a shift in momentum that ultimately favoured England.

"India could certainly have been more positive in their batting approach in the second innings. Once Rohit Sharma got out and Ravindra Jadeja was run out, the course of the match changed," the legendary leg-spinner added further.

Parthiv Patel Critical of Shubman Gill's Approach

Former India cricketer Parthiv Patel echoed Kumble's sentiments, particularly regarding batter Shubman Gill's struggles at the crease. Patel emphasised the importance of a proactive batting approach at the international level, urging Gill to adapt his mindset and seek opportunities to score, even in the absence of boundary-scoring opportunities.

"The way Shubman was batting in the first innings, he was not trying to play shots. If you don't try to score, then bowlers at the international level won't give you too many loose deliveries. He has to show the skills to rotate the strike even if he's not finding boundaries. He cannot make technical adjustments (ahead of the second Test) but can definitely change his mindset and approach towards batting," the former wicketkeeper-batter stated.

Gill Under Pressure: Zaheer Khan

Adding to the discourse on Gill's performance, former India seamer Zaheer Khan emphasized the need for the young batsman to overcome the pressure and expectations that come with representing India at the highest level.

"He (Gill) looked under pressure even in the first innings. Because of the calibre of the batsman that he is, we did not see the kind of flow from his batting that we are used to seeing in the first innings. A batsman batting at No. 3 looks to build on the momentum and we did not see that. That shows he's under some sort of pressure. So, he has to deal with it. But as of now, I don't think that there is a question mark over his place in the side."

As Team India reflects on its performances and prepares for the next encounter, the lessons learned from this match will undoubtedly shape the team's strategies and mindset moving forward in the series.
