India vs England: Virat Kohli-Shubman Gill perish inside 10 overs as English pacers silent Lucknow crowd

ICC Cricket World Cup 2023: Team India suffered two massive jolts inside the first powerplay as they lost key wickets of Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli against England at Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on Sunday (October 29).

India - who are batting first for the first time in the ongoing competition - were put in to bat first by England captain Jos Buttler in the ODI World Cup 2023. Team India - who playing with the same team that played against New Zealand in Dharamsala last Sunday - will be defending a total for the first time in the ongoing tournament.

However, they didn't get the best of starts against an old rival on a pitch that is testing the batters right from the start of the innings. English pacers David Willey and Chris Woakes opened the bowling and both provided the breakthroughs to push the hosts on the backfoot early on.

How Shubman Gill was dismissed?

Chris Woakes provided the first breakthrough for England by clean bowling Shubman Gill on the final ball of the fourth over. Gill - who opened his account in the game with a beautiful cover drive that yielded him a boundary - could only score nine runs off 13 balls.

The right-handed batter failed to judge the line of the in-swinging delivery from Woakes to beat his bat and crashed into the stumps. The 24-year-old batter - who is the leading run-scorer in ODIs in 2023 - walked towards the pavilion as the scoreboard read 26.

How Virat Kohli was dismissed?

The fans at Ekana Stadium pinned hopes on India's in-form number three Virat Kohli, who had to walk early into the middle. Chase-master Kohli - who has been scoring runs for fun in the ongoing ten-team tournament - couldn't even open his account in the game and departed for a duck.

Kohli - who couldn't get off the mark despite facing eight balls - erred his judging the slowness of the pitch and tried to clear Willey's short-pitched delivery over mid-off but failed to time it well.

The ball couldn't go past the 30-yard circle and Ben Stokes gobbled it comfortably to stun the spectators who were anticipating the record-equalling 49th ODI ton from the batting maestro.

It was the first time when Kohli went back to the pavilion without troubling the scorer in an ODI World Cup game. India, thus, lost two wickets in a space of one run and 17 deliveries. The impact of two early wickets meant the Men In Blue didn't get a good start inside the first 10 overs.

India could only reach 35/2 in 10 overs and it is the second lowest powerplay 1 total for India after 27/3 vs Australia in Chennai in their first match. It was also the lowest total conceded by England in the first ten overs in six matches so far this World Cup. The previous lowest powerplay 1 total against England was 56/2 vs Sri Lanka in Bengaluru.
