Johannesburg, Jan 25: Jasprit Bumrah achieved his maiden five-wicket haul in Test cricket as India restricted South Africa to 194 in their first innings on the second day of the third Test here on Thursday (January 25).
After coming in to bat in the second innings, the batsmen showed some composure and lost just one wicket till the end of the day's play to take an upper hand in the game.
Trailing by just 7 runs, India were off to a good start as Parthiv Patel came out to open the second innings with Murali Vijay. Patel, however, was dismissed for 16 by Vernon Philander but gave some confidence with his small yet effective knock.
Later, KL Rahul (16*) and Murali Vijay (13*) batted well as India reached 49/1 at stumps and took 42 runs' lead. A lot will now depend on their batting on the third day but they would be certainly the happier side of the two on Thursday.
Earlier, putting up an impressive show with the ball, Bumrah returned with brilliant figures of 5/54 while Bhuvneshwar Kumar grabbed a brilliant 3/44 and ensured the hosts took just 7 runs lead in their first innings.
Hashim Amla was the only batsman who offered resistance to the Indian bowlers as he notched up his career's 37th Test half-century. Some vital contributions down the order from Vernon Philander and nightwatchman Kagiso Rabada helped the hosts to overhaul India's lead.
Amla scored 61 while Philander scored valuable 35 runs and ensured their team wasn't restricted to a below-par total in their first innings on a surface favouring pacers.
Nightwatchman Kagiso Rabada (30) emerged as the third highest scorer for the side as none of the Protea batsmen could pose much threat to the visitors.
Bhuvneshwar started the proceedings for India at the start of the day by getting rid of Dean Elgar for 4. Then Amla and Rabada stitched 75-run stand for the third wicket to frustrate the visitors.

Rabada's gritty innings came to an end in the 30th over when he was caught in the gully by Ajinkya Rahane off Ishant Sharma.
Bhuvneshwar then got the big wicket of AB de Villiers by castling the right-handed batsman with an inswinging ball. De Villiers' departure for 5 was a major success for the visitors as the batsman has consistently troubled the Indian bowlers in the series.
After Bhuvneshwar's brilliant spells it was Bumrah's turn to shine and he once again accounted for Faf du Plessis' wicket for 8. Du Plessis tried to leave an inswinging delivery from the young pacer but the ball came in and went brushing his off-stumps.
Bumrah then bagged another crucial wicket by getting Quinton de Kock caught behind for 8. It was yet another brilliant delivery from the bowler and ably caught behind the stumps by Parthiv. The youngster got the third big wicket of the innings when he dismissed well-set Hashim Amla caught in the deep for 61.
With the end of Amla's innings at 169, Indian bowlers ensured the tail-enders couldn't do much damage and picked up wickets at regular intervals to finally restrict them to 194. Bumrah then came into his T20 mode and got the wickets of tail-enders Andile Phehlukwayo (9) and Lungi Ngidi (0) to complete his maiden fifer.
Mohammed Shami, who once again looked rusty in the first innings got the lone wicket of Vernon Philander.
The visitors have bowled well once again as they did what was expected of them, but the responsibility now lies with the batters to post a decent total on the board.
The pitch is going to be tough for batting so the batsmen would have to apply themselves well and take the game away from the hosts' grip.
