Centurion, Feb 16: India skipper and batting mainstay Virat Kohli slammed his career's 35th ODI century and went on to become the first-ever player to aggregate 500 ODI runs in a bilateral series.

The 29-year-old swashbuckler, who has made it a habit of scoring tons whenever he comes out to bat, completed his third century in the series. The chase master remained unbeaten on 129 as he took his team to an emphatic 8-wicket win over Proteas.

This was his 19th ton in a successful run chase and led his team from the front as India created history by defeating South Africa 5-1 in the bilateral series.

The right-handed batsman completed his century in style by hitting a brilliant four down the ground. The run machine looked in a different zone altogether and was hardly troubled by their bowlers.

Coming out of chase the target of 205 runs, India lost the wicket of Rohit Sharma early. But Kohli's arrival at the crease only aggravated the trouble for the Proteas as runs started flowing quickly.

Kohli has surpassed the record that was previously held by his teammate Rohit Sharma, who scored 491 runs in the six-match series against Australia.

Virat Kohli, who's only behind Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar in terms of centuries scored, took just innings 200 innings to 35th ODI hundred.

Tendulkar, who owns the record of most ODI tons (49), took 309 innings to touch this milestone.

He has also scored his 13th ton as a captain.

Kohli also became the first Indian batsman to smash three centuries in a bilateral series.

Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman have scored three centuries but not in a bilateral series.

Ganguly scored three centuries during the 2003 World Cup in South Africa, while Laxman slammed three tons during the 2004 VB Series in Australia.
