Happy Birthday IPL: On April 18, a significant chapter in the history of Indian cricket unfolded as the inaugural match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) took place on this day in 2008. This date marks the beginning of a revolutionary cricket tournament that would transform the landscape of the sport in India and across the globe.

The IPL, conceptualised by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and launched in 2008, introduced a new era of 'cricketainment', combining the thrill of T20 cricket with the glitz and glamour of entertainment. The league brought together top cricketers from around the world, forming eight franchises representing different cities across India.

Original IPL Teams

The T20 league, which the BCCI started to cull the rebel Indian Cricket League (ICL), had 8 teams in the first edition. Mumbai Indians, Kolkata Knight Riders, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Chennai Super Kings, Rajasthan Royals, Deccan Chargers, Kings XI Punjab and Delhi Daredevils were the first eight teams.

Another big reason for the BCCI to launch a T20 league was a young Indian Cricket Team's T20 World Cup triumph in 2007 in South Africa, where MS Dhoni-led Indian side defeated arch-rivals Pakistan in a nail-biting last-over thriller in the final.

The first match of the IPL was a clash between the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore on April 18.

The highly anticipated encounter captured the imagination of cricket fans worldwide. The excitement was palpable as legendary cricketers, emerging talents, and international stars took to the field to showcase their skills in the shortest format of the game.

The level of competition kept getting better with every season and today, the league is the most sought-after franchise-based T20 competition the world over.

IPL Revenue Growth Between 2008 and 2023

In 2008, the franchise owners remitted Rs 289 crore (roughly US$62 million) to the BCCI as the initial yearly instalment of the sums they offered to procure rights to possess an IPL team. However, under the revenue-sharing arrangement, they have recouped Rs 224 crore from the central earnings of the inaugural edition, conducted from April 18 to June 1.

In its inaugural year of 2008, the IPL announced a gross income of Rs 645 crore and a profit of Rs 51 crore after disbursing dues to franchises and state associations.

By December 2022, the IPL achieved decacorn status, valued at US$10.9 billion, marking a 75% increase in dollar value since 2020, when it was valued at $6.2 billion, according to a report by consulting firm D & P Advisory.

A decacorn denotes a privately held company with a valuation surpassing $10 billion. The IPL's brand value surged by 28% to $10.7 billion. An analysis by India Today's Data Intelligence Unit from the IPL's inception in 2008 to 2023 revealed a 433% increase in its brand valuation over these 15 years.

IPL Market Growth From 2008 To 2023

The 'India Sports Sponsorship Report' from GroupM ESP highlights a remarkable 6.5-fold increase in the industry since the IPL's emergence in 2008. Revenue from sponsorship, endorsements, and advertising expenditures soared from Rs. 2,423 crore in 2008 to an impressive Rs. 15,766 crore in 2023, marking the industry's first crossing of the Rs. 15,000-crore threshold.

Cricket has spearheaded this significant commercial growth, contributing a staggering 87% (Rs. 13,701 crore) of the total sports industry spending in India, showing a robust 13% increase from 2022's figures (Rs. 12,115 crore).

This surge in cricket's spending was ignited by a fierce bidding war between Viacom and Disney, who secured digital and TV rights, respectively, for the IPL, paying Rs. 23,758 crore and Rs. 23,575 crore for the 2023-27 cycle. This was a stark contrast to Star, which had acquired both TV and digital rights for Rs. 16,347 crore for the 2018-2022 period.

The media rights sale across various platforms resulted in a per-match valuation of Rs. 118.5 crore for the IPL, second only to the National Football League (NFL), with a corresponding figure of Rs. 141 crore.

As we commemorate April 18, let us celebrate the spirit of cricket and the enduring legacy of the IPL, which continues to redefine the boundaries of the sport and business.
