New Delhi, Feb 28: The eleventh edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is going to witness the debut of the Decision Review System (DRS) as the BCCI has finally given its nod for the introduction of the system.
The BCCI was a staunch critic of the DRS and it had been quite vocal about its opposition to the referral system insisting it wasn't foolproof. It was only till late 2016 when the board finally agreed to use the DRS in the bilateral series against England.
As per a report published by the Indian Express, a BCCI official was quoted as saying, "The BCCI was keen to have DRS on board since quite some time but it was only this year we felt we should go ahead with it for the IPL. We have the best of all other systems in place, so why not DRS? Anyway we have been using it for India's international matches for over a year and a half now."
The board had even organised a thorough training session for ten domestic umpires on DRS in Visakhapatnam, keeping the IPL in mind. Denis Burns, the ICC umpires' coach and former Australian pacer-turned umpire Paul Reiffel had flown in to brief the umpires about the technology. These ten umpires would be officiating in the IPL 11.
"Indian domestic cricket doesn't use the DRS system till date. As local umpires are being hired for the IPL, the board had called us to be briefed about the system. We were told that the board will be using DRS in IPL and they wanted us to get used to the technology," one of the domestic umpires who attended the session was quoted by the report as saying.
The IPL will become the second major T20 league after the Pakistan Super League to adopt the DRS.
