IPL 2023: Akash Madhwal Produces Best Bowling Figures In IPL Playoffs; Records Galore As MI Enter Qualifier 2

Akash Madhwal equalled legendary India cricketer Anil Kumble's record for the most economical five-for in the history of IPL and helped Mumbai Indians storm into the IPL 2023 Qualifier 2.

The young uncapped player from Uttarakhand picked up a superb five-for to help Mumbai Indians bundle out Lucknow Super Giants by a big margin of 81 runs in Eliminator at MA Chidambaram Stadium on Wednesday (May 24).

The right-arm pacer - who finished with incredible figures of 5/5 from 3.3 overs - became the first bowler in history to take a five-wicket haul in the Eliminator of the IPL.

Madhwal - who is an engineer by profession - came to the MI camp as a replacement for Suryakumar Yadav in the previous season. The cricketer - who hails from Roorkee - created history by producing the best figures from figures (5/5) as the best in a knockout match of a franchise T20 tournament.

Prior to Madhwal, Pakistan's Mohammad Sami held the record with his figures of 5/8 in the second qualifying final of PSL 2016 for Islamabad United against Karachi Kings.

Lauding Madhwal for his impressive performance, MI skipper Rohit Sharma said at the post-match presentation, "He (Akash) was part of the team last year as a support bowler, and once Jofra was gone and I knew he had skills and the character to do the job for us."

"Over the years we have seen many guys coming in from Mumbai Indians and playing for India. It is important to make them (youngsters) feel special and make them feel part of the team, my job is to just make them comfortable in the middle. They are very clear in their roles about what they need to do for the team and that's what you want."

Earlier in the day, Afghanistan seamer Naveen ul Haq picked up four wickets as Lucknow Super Giants restricted Mumbai Indians to 182 for 8 in the IPL Eliminator.

Naveen, who has been under the spotlight since his angry exchanges with Virat Kohli during a league game against RCB, was constantly booed by the Chepauk crowd but he did well enough to dismiss MI skipper Rohit Sharma (11 off 10 balls), batting mainstay Suryakumar Yadav (33 off 20 balls), last match's hero Cameron Green (41 off 23 balls) and the ever dangerous Tilak Verma (26 off 22 balls).
