IPL 2023: Watch - Ravichandran Ashwin let off Shikhar Dhawan with warning at non-striker end

By Aditya K Halder

Ravichandran Ashwin let off Shikhar Dhawan with a warning at the non-striker end for a run out during Rajasthan Royals vs Punjab Kings (RR vs PBKS) match in IPL 2023 on Wednesday. Ashwin, while bowling his over, found Dhawan out of his crease before the Royals spinner bowled the delivery.

However, R Ashwin halted his bowling action upon finding Dhawan off his crease and turned around towards the stumps but didn't dislodge the bails, warning the Punjab Kings skipper for his first mistake. (Watch video below)

The camera notoriously panned toward Ashwin's RR teammate Jos Buttler, who was fielding during the match. Buttler was infamously dismissed by Ashwin, who played for now-rechristened Kings XI Punjab, during IPL 2019 in what was informally known as Mankading dismissal back then.

The mode of dismissal caused a stir back then as it was called to be against the spirit of the game. Ashwin, however, stood by his decision and ICC eventually registered such dismissals in its rule book as non-striker-end run out.

ICC added that a bowler can run out batter for leaving the crease early with no warning necessary. However, some bowlers still prefer to give a warning to the batter first, as was the case on Wednesday.

Earlier during the Sunrisers Hyderabad vs Rajasthan Royals this IPL 2023, Ashwin made a failed attempt to run out SRH batter Adil Rashid at the non-striker end. Ashwin halted his run-up in a familiar fashion to check Rashid but the English batter was well within his crease and gave a surprise look back to the spinner. Moments later, Rashid also shot the bowler for a six.

It's worth recalling that during India vs Sri Lanka series earlier this year, Mohammad Shami ran out Dasun Shanaka, who was closing in on a century, at the non-striker end. However, Shami withdrew his appeal after skipper Rohit Sharma talked him out of it.
