Anuj Rawat became the unlikely star for Royal Challengers Bangalore on Friday (March 22) when the Delhi southpaw scored a 48 in the IPL 2024 opener against Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The young batter earned praise from the franchise's fans, who also compared him to Adam Gilchrist.
Rawat (48 runs off 25 balls) had a 95-run partnership with Dinesh Karthik (38*), taking the side to 173/6 in 20 overs after the star-studded RCB batting line-up was reduced to 73/5 in 12 overs. RCB fans didn't expect the unheralded batter to perform and many were seen apologising to Rawat on Twitter.

During the match, RCB captain Faf du Plessis opted to bat first after winning the toss but was seen regretting his decision as the Bangalore's batting order collapsed with CSK overseas pacer Mustafizzur Rahman taking three wickets in his first three overs.
Gaikwad went to Mustafizur Rahman after other CSK bowlers gave up 37 runs in the first four overs. Du Plessis first hit a dot before he blasted the second ball through additional cover for a four. It was a mini-collapse from there.
The following one was hoicked by Faf du Plessis, a well-disguised delivery outside off, and wound up at backward point in the safe hands of Rachin Ravindra, one of the new CSK recruits this season. After Rajat Patidar edged after two balls, Mahendra Singh Dhoni had his first opportunity of the IPL 2024.
Following a short break, Rahman claimed the crucial wicket of Virat Kohli, who was again caught at deep by Ravindra. His bowling stats were improved to 4/6 when Cameroon Green hit a cover for Ajinkya Rahane. Seeking an elusive IPL championship, RCB scored 78/5 in 11.4.
At the time of writing this report, Chennai Super Kings were about to begin their chase of 174 runs with the mid-innings break underway.
