Gujarat Titans' young skipper Shubman Gill's impeccable unbeaten half-century was overshadowed by the explosive innings of the uncapped Shashank Singh, leading Punjab Kings to a thrilling three-wicket victory in the IPL 2024 match number 17 on Thursday (April 4).
Gill's stellar knock of 89 runs off 48 balls, the highest individual score of the season thus far, comprised six fours and four maximums, propelling GT to a formidable total of 199 for four at Narendra Modi Stadium. B Sai Sudharsan's quickfire 33 off 19 balls and Rahul Tewatia's unbeaten 23 off eight balls further bolstered GT's innings.

However, the spotlight shifted to Shashank Singh, who played a match-winning unbeaten innings of 61 runs off 29 balls, striking six boundaries and four sixes, steering PBKS to victory with just one ball to spare.
Ashutosh Sharma's contribution of 31 runs off 17 balls, alongside Shashank, built a crucial partnership of 43 runs off 22 balls, ensuring PBKS' successful chase. Despite a strong start by GT, PBKS faced early setbacks with the dismissal of captain Shikhar Dhawan and Jonny Bairstow. Despite intermittent wickets, Shashank's aggressive batting kept PBKS in contention.
Kane Williamson, stepping in for the injured David Miller, displayed excellent form with a score of 26 runs off 22 balls. He managed to find the boundaries against Sam Curran and Kagiso Rabada, keeping the Gujarat Titans' scoreboard moving. However, Williamson's innings was abruptly ended by left-arm spinner Harpreet Brar's delivery with extra bounce, resulting in a catch at backward point by Jonny Bairstow in the ninth over.
Zimbabwean all-rounder Sikandar Raza faced a tough challenge from Gill and the newcomer B Sai Sudharsan, conceding 14 runs in the 12th over, including three boundaries. Gill led the charge with an aggressive approach, hitting Rabada for a six, while Sudharsan followed suit with a boundary to mid-off, maintaining the momentum for the team.
Despite losing partners at intervals, Gill anchored the innings with finesse, supported by Sudharsan's aggressive batting. However, Harshal Patel's dismissal of Sudharsan and the fall of other wickets slowed GT's momentum.
Gill's fifty came off 31 balls, marked by his dominant stroke play. While Gill continued his onslaught, Vijay Shankar's dismissal further dampened GT's hopes. In the final overs, Rahul Tewatia's explosive batting added crucial runs to GT's total.
