Punjab Kings Batter Shashank Singh Repays 'Trust' Shown By Preity Zinta-Ness Wadia During IPL 2024 Auction

Shashank Singh, the Punjab Kings all-rounder, played an unforgettable knock in a nail-biting encounter against Gujarat Titans in IPL 2024 match and stole the sheen off India star Shubman Gill, who scored a fluent 48-ball 89* at Narendra Modi Stadium on Thursday (April 4).

His match-winning effort not only earned Shashank Singh praise but also brought him into the limelight as Punjab Kings chased down the highest target in IPL 2024. The Kings defeated the Titans by three wickets with one ball to spare in a tense encounter going down the wire. His unbeaten knock of 61 off just 29 deliveries secured a memorable win for the Shikhar Dhawan-led side.

Shashank Singh's Heroic Knock For Punjab Kings

The IPL encounter between Punjab Kings and Gujarat Titans witnessed an extraordinary display of skill and nerve from Shashank Singh. Walking into the middle amid a challenging run chase, Shashank remained unperturbed by the pressure and took charge of the situation.

With Punjab Kings reeling at 111/5 when he walked into the middle in the daunting run chase of 200, Shashank displayed exceptional temperament and composure. Partnering with his teammates, Shashank orchestrated a remarkable comeback.

His partnership with Jitesh Sharma and later with Ashutosh Sharma showcased his ability to anchor an innings under pressure. Shashank's calculated aggression, coupled with his ability to find boundaries when needed, turned the tide in Punjab Kings' favour.

After adding a stand of 39 runs for the sixth wicket Jitesh departed for 16 as Rashid Khan got the right-handed batter caught. He then shared a stand of 43 runs with Ashutosh Sharma - who scored a valuable 17-ball 31.

As the game reached its climax, with just seven runs required off the final over, Ashutosh was dismissed, adding further drama to the contest. Shashank, however, kept his cool and hit a boundary on the fourth ball to first equalise and later stole a single on the penultimate delivery to deny the hosts a famous win.

Who is Shashank Singh?

Shashank Singh hails from Chhattisgarh and is known for his prowess as an all-rounder in cricket. Making his IPL debut in 2022, Shashank has steadily made a mark with his performances. Despite limited opportunities, he has showcased his talent with both bat and ball. With a promising career ahead of him, Shashank's recent heroics have solidified his position as a rising star in the world of cricket.

What was the controversy surrounding Shashank Singh during the IPL 2024 Auction?

During the IPL 2024 Auction, there were two players named Shashank Singh listed. One was the hard-hitting batter from Chattisgarh, whom Punjab Kings (PBKS) eventually bought. The other was a 19-year-old rookie from Bengal who had not yet played first-class cricket.

During the accelerated auction round, the younger Shashank Singh was presented first but went unsold. Shortly after, the experienced batsman, who had previously been part of the SRH squad, appeared at the auction auction, with PBKS being the sole franchise to place a bid. Following the fall of the auctioneer's hammer, the player was sold to PBKS at his base price of INR 20 lakh.

However, the drama did not end there. When the auctioneer proceeded to the next player, Tanay Thyagrajan, there was noticeable activity at the PBKS table. Co-owners Ness Wadia and Preity Zinta raised their hands to get the auctioneer's attention.

From the audio of the auctioneer, it was clear that PBKS wanted to retract their bid. Nonetheless, the auctioneer explained that once the hammer had fallen, they were obligated to accept the player into their squad. The development caught the media's attention.

PBKS, in a statement released on the next day, clarified that the Chhattisgarh all-rounder had always been on their target list, and the confusion arose due to two players sharing the same name on the auction list.

"Official Update Punjab Kings would like to clarify that Shashank Singh was always on our target list. The confusion was due to 2 players of the same name being on the list. We are delighted to have him on board and see him contribute to our success," tweeted PBKS.

Subsequently, Shashank, acquired by PBKS, expressed his gratitude to the franchise in response to their statement, saying, "It's All Cool ... Thank you for Trusting me!". With his knock against Gujarat Titans, Shashank has now returned the favour to the owners for trusting his talent and skills.
