By MyKhel Staff

IPL 2024: Mumbai Indians' skipper Hardik Pandya has affirmed that his predecessor Rohit Sharma will continue to be a guiding influence for him during the upcoming IPL season seventeen, despite the unexpected change in leadership that stirred a response from fans.

The Baroda cricketer, who returns to Mumbai Indians as captain for the 2024 edition, expressed gratitude for Rohit's mentorship and emphasised the seamless transition in leadership.

The announcement of Pandya's captaincy came as a surprise to many, given Rohit Sharma's illustrious tenure with Mumbai Indians, leading the team to five IPL titles. However, Pandya remains unfazed by the transition, acknowledging Rohit's invaluable contributions to the team's success.

"It will not be any different, he will always be there to help me," Pandya stated at a media interaction. "You mentioned that he is the captain of the Indian team, which helps me because this team, what it has achieved, it has achieved under him. From now onwards, it is about carrying forward that legacy."

Pandya admitted that his elevation to captaincy and the subsequent replacement of Rohit Sharma did evoke a backlash from a section of fans. However, he emphasized the importance of focusing on the controllables and maintaining a professional outlook amidst external opinions.

"The backlash...To be very honest we respect fans but at the same time, we focus on the sport and what is required," Pandya asserted. "I focus on the controllables and I do not focus on what I cannot control."

Despite the scrutiny, Pandya remains grateful for the support of fans and acknowledges their right to express their opinions. He reiterated his commitment to leading Mumbai Indians to success in the upcoming season, focusing on the process and collective effort of the team.

As Pandya prepares to lead Mumbai Indians, he also addressed concerns regarding his fitness following a lengthy rehabilitation period for an ankle injury sustained during the ODI World Cup. The star all-rounder reassured fans of his readiness, stating, "I have no issues with my body, I plan to play all the games."

With the IPL providing a platform for Pandya's return to top-level cricket, expectations are high for Mumbai Indians to add another trophy to their cabinet. Pandya emphasized the importance of focusing on the process and team cohesion to achieve success in the tournament.

Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians' head coach Mark Boucher expressed confidence in Rohit Sharma's form and hoped for a successful campaign with the squad's collective experience and recent cricketing engagements. As the team gears up for the IPL season, the focus remains on harnessing their strengths and executing their game plan effectively.
