The IPL has had a long history of unearthing hidden gems, and Shashank Singh of Punjab Kings is the latest to shine brightly in that illustrious list.
In a remarkable display of batting brilliance, Singh steered his team to a thrilling victory against the Gujarat Titans in match number 17 of IPL 2024, held at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Thursday (April 4).

This match will be remembered for Singh's phenomenal knock, as he chased down the highest total of IPL 2024 so far. The right-handed batsman was a relatively unknown entity before his innings, but he stole the limelight by helping Punjab pull off a seemingly impossible chase of 200 runs.
Batting under immense pressure, Singh showcased exceptional temperament and nerves of steel. Hailing from Chhattisgarh, the batter not only smashed his maiden IPL fifty but also orchestrated a win that will be etched in the memories of fans for a long time.
When Singh walked into bat, PBKS were in a precarious situation at 111/5 after 12.2 overs. The daunting task of scoring 89 runs off just 46 balls loomed large, with Jitesh Sharma, the Punjab vice-captain, being the only recognized batsman remaining at the crease.
Singh and Sharma stitched together a crucial 39-run partnership for the sixth wicket before Sharma departed for 16, caught by Rashid Khan. However, Singh remained undeterred. He then forged a vital 43-run stand with Ashutosh Sharma, who played a valuable cameo of 31 runs off 17 balls.
With 25 runs required off the last 12 balls, Singh brought his team to the cusp of victory by launching two sixes in the penultimate over bowled by the experienced Mohit Sharma. He continued his onslaught, smashing a maximum on the final ball of the 19th over, tilting the momentum decisively in PBKS' favor. They now needed just 7 runs from the final six balls.
Although Ashutosh Sharma was dismissed by Darshan Nalkande on the first ball of the 20th over, raising Gujarat's hopes, Singh remained calm and composed. The drama unfolded as the equation boiled down to 5 runs required off 3 balls. Unfazed by the pressure, Singh displayed remarkable composure and smashed a boundary towards the short third man, levelling the scores. He then took a single to secure a memorable win for his team and, in the process, chased down the highest total of IPL 2024.
Shashank Singh is a promising all-rounder who bats right-handed and bowls off-spin. He made his IPL debut in 2022 for Sunrisers Hyderabad. Before his match-winning knock, Singh had played just 13 IPL matches, scoring a total of 99 runs with an average of 19.80.
His highest IPL score before this game was 25*, and he had hit only 7 fours and 6 sixes in his IPL career. However, against a quality bowling attack like Gujarat Titans, he displayed exceptional power-hitting, smashing six fours and four sixes en route to an unbeaten 61 off just 29 balls.
This knock has undoubtedly announced Shashank Singh's arrival on the big stage. His fearless batting and composure under pressure have not only earned him a place in the record books but also signalled the rise of a new star in the IPL.
