IPL 2024: Former Super King R Ashwin Shares Insights on MS Dhoni Handing Over CSK Captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad

Former India captain MS Dhoni's decision to step down as the skipper of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) ahead of the 2024 IPL season marked the end of an era in the cricketing world. The cricketing fraternity, as well as fans, were once again left stunned by the former India cricketer's bold move on the eve of the new season.

However, veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who began his IPL journey under Dhoni's leadership at CSK, suggests that this significant move wasn't abrupt. In fact, Ashwin believes that Dhoni would have communicated with Ruturaj Gaikwad about the change in captaincy well in advance.

In a recent video on his YouTube channel, Ashwin expressed his thoughts on Dhoni's decision and its impact on CSK. "This was an inevitable decision. It had to come at some stage," he said, indicating that Dhoni, known for his astute captaincy and team-first approach, would have carefully orchestrated the transition.

Ashwin pointed out that Dhoni's leadership style revolves around prioritising the team's well-being. Drawing parallels, he mentioned how Dhoni had previously entrusted the captaincy to Ravindra Jadeja, and now, to Ruturaj Gaikwad. According to Ashwin, the decision of who would take over the reins was predetermined, with only the timing and the chosen successor in question.

Speculating on the behind-the-scenes conversations, Ashwin suggested that Dhoni would have mentored Gaikwad for the leadership role well in advance. "Ruturaj wouldn't have thought his role was only a batter until yesterday," Ashwin said, hinting at Dhoni's mentorship.

He painted a picture of Dhoni advising Gaikwad, reassuring him of his capabilities, and offering support for the transition. Such conversations, Ashwin believes, would have prepared Gaikwad mentally for the challenges of captaincy.

Speaking of Gaikwad's personality, Ashwin emphasised his calm and composed demeanour, traits reminiscent of Dhoni's leadership style. "I know Ruturaj, he is extremely cool and calm. He is a very good human being," Ashwin remarked, expressing his confidence in Gaikwad's ability to lead CSK effectively.

With the baton now passed, all eyes will be on Gaikwad as he embarks on this new chapter, carrying forward the legacy of one of the most successful franchises in IPL history.
