Shardul Thakur - the India all-rounder - was bought by Chennai Super Kings for a bid of Rs 4 crore at the IPL 2024 Auction at the Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai. The right-arm medium-pacer and a decent lower-order batter will be reunited with his previous franchise in the IPL 2024 season.
The Mumbaikar - who is nicknamed Palghar Express - was released by Kolkata Knight Riders ahead of the IPL 2024 Auction as he failed to live up to the franchise's expectations in the previous season.

Thakur was traded to Kolkata Knight Riders from Delhi Capitals before the IPL 2023 season for a sum of Rs 10.75 crore. Despite the franchise's hopes for a strong performance, Thakur's 11 matches with KKR saw him score 113 runs, including a fifty, and take just 7 wickets. His expensive bowling, with an average of 31.43 and an economy rate exceeding 10, led to his release by KKR before the auction.
Having originally been purchased by Delhi Capitals for Rs 10.75 crore in IPL 2022, Thakur faced consistent scrutiny at his new IPL home. His IPL 2022 performance for DC included 14 matches, 15 wickets, and 120 runs at a strike rate of 137.93. However, the trade to KKR in IPL 2023 did not change his fate, resulting in his release as he failed to replicate his performance post-CSK.
He made his CSK debut in 2018 and played four years on the trot for the Yellow Army under MS Dhoni's captaincy. The cricketer - who made his IPL debut in 2015 - went on to become a household name after donning CSK's yellow in 2018.
Thakur picked up 16 wickets (13 games), 8 wickets (10 games), 8 wickets (10 games), 10 wickets (9 games) and 21 wickets (16 games) in 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021 respectively. Consistent good performances in the premier domestic T20 tournament contributed to his national call-up and further boosted his confidence.
The all-rounder emerged as a man with a golden arm for CSK as well as for Team India. However, his stocks in the IPL started dwindling after leaving CSK as he couldn't replicate the performances he gave in the Yellow jersey.
Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra while analysing teams post IPL 2024 Auction on his YouTube channel termed Shardul as a real steal for CSK at auction. "They (CSK) surprised a little when they were going for Travis Head but picked Rachin Ravindra - well done. Shardul Thakur was a steal for them. Shardul Thakur for four crores w
Now back with his previous franchise, where he initially gained prominence, Thakur has the opportunity to rejuvenate his form under the guidance of the inspirational captain MS Dhoni and within the team culture this franchise fosters.
