IPL 2025 Retention: Arshdeep Singh uncertain to continue with Punjab Kings; mulling to go into auction pool

As the IPL 2025 retention deadline approaches, all eyes are on which players will be retained or released by their franchises, with India's left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh being one of the key players under the spotlight.

Arshdeep, who has been a core member of Punjab Kings since his debut in 2019, is widely recognised as one of the best Indian bowlers in the IPL over the past five seasons.

Arshdeep Singh IPL 2025 Retention

The 25-year-old bowler's journey with the Mohali-based franchise has been nothing short of inspiring. His impressive performances in the IPL earned him a place in India's national squad, where he has emerged as a highly effective T20 specialist. Despite his strong association with Punjab Kings, recent reports reveal that Arshdeep is still undecided about his future with the team.

Sources close to the development informed myKhel that Arshdeep Singh is "50/50" on his decision to stay with Punjab Kings or enter the auction pool. With a retention price reported at Rs 18 crore, Arshdeep may consider entering the auction in pursuit of a bigger contract. Given the premium on left-arm quicks and his status as a proven T20 specialist, Arshdeep could easily attract attention from multiple teams eager to bolster their bowling lineup with match-winning capabilities.

In recent years, franchises have increasingly prioritized specialist T20 players, recognising the impact they bring in limited-overs cricket. This shift in approach was exemplified during the IPL 2024 auction when Australia's left-arm pacer Mitchell Starc set a record, going to Kolkata Knight Riders for an unprecedented Rs 24.25 crore. KKR's mentor, Gautam Gambhir, notably championed Starc, showcasing a growing trend among franchises to invest in players who can single-handedly alter the course of a game.

If Arshdeep Singh opts to enter the auction, he will likely be one of the most sought-after players. With the IPL 2025 auction slated to take place in Saudi Arabia, Arshdeep could command an even higher bid as teams look to secure a top-tier left-arm pacer.

In his IPL career so far, Arshdeep has played 65 games, claiming 78 wickets, with his 2024 season yielding 19 wickets in 14 games. His consistency and effectiveness in high-pressure situations make him a valuable asset for any franchise.

As the retention deadline draws near, Arshdeep's decision will not only impact Punjab Kings but could also reshape the strategies of several franchises vying for top talent. Whether he stays with his current team or goes to the highest bidder, Arshdeep's presence is set to be a game-changer in the upcoming IPL season.
