IPL 2025: Rishabh Pant's decision to stay with Delhi Capitals instead of opting for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) season 2025, despite his close friendship with MS Dhoni, seems to have been influenced by both professional and personal factors.
While Pant has great respect for Dhoni and shares a strong bond with him, playing under Dhoni's shadow at CSK might not have been the ideal situation for Pant, especially considering his previous experiences with the crowd and the expectations surrounding Dhoni's legacy.

In his early days for India, a young Pant faced booing from the crowd, particularly when he was seen as Dhoni's successor. Also Read: BCCI To Allow 6 Retentions for IPL 2025
This was a tough period for Pant, especially around the time leading up to the 2019 Cricket World Cup, when Dhoni was still active, and the comparison between the two was a constant talking point. Going through a similar ordeal at CSK, where Dhoni has an almost cult-like following, could have been an uncomfortable experience for Pant.
On the other hand, Pant has a strong connection with Delhi, having played for Delhi Capitals for several years. His relationship with the franchise, particularly with co-owner Parth Jindal may have sealed the deal for him, sources informed MyKhel. Pant not moving to CSK this season doesn't rule out a future transfer, especially since Dhoni is expected to play one more season of IPL. Pant could indeed become a potential successor at CSK, marking a significant shift from the Dhoni era to the Pant era, symbolising the end of "Thala" and the beginning of a new chapter for the franchise. However, the likelihood of this happening hinges largely on how Delhi Capitals perform in the 2025 IPL. If Pant successfully leads Delhi to a strong season or even an IPL title, it will likely reinforce his position as their leader, making it harder for CSK to lure him away.
Pant's stature as a captain would only grow with a successful IPL campaign, giving him little reason to leave a franchise where he is already established and valued. On the other hand, if Delhi does not perform well or if Pant feels that a change in environment would benefit his career, then a move to CSK could still be on the cards. In this case, CSK could be the ideal destination for him to step into the big shoes of Dhoni.
If Pant stays with Delhi Capitals and they perform well, CSK would need to explore other captaincy options. While Pant may have been the preferred choice due to his wicketkeeping, batting ability, and leadership potential, CSK has other candidates who could take on the role, such as Ruturaj Gaikwad or even considering an experienced player from another team.
The franchise has always been strategic in making long-term decisions, and they might groom someone from within or bring in an experienced player to fill the void left by Dhoni. In any case, CSK will have to make some crucial decisions post-Dhoni, but Pant's future with them will depend significantly on how the next IPL season unfolds for both Delhi and CSK.
