IPL 2026 PBKS vs MI Statistical Highlights: Punjab Kings' Dramatic Collapse Continues as Mumbai Indians Hand Them Fifth Straight Defeat
Punjab Kings's IPL 2026 campaign is rapidly turning into one of the season's most dramatic collapses after their heartbreaking defeat to Mumbai Indians in Dharamsala marked a fifth consecutive loss - a stunning reversal for a side that had looked like genuine title contenders only weeks ago.
The defeat was not just another setback in a tightly packed playoff race. It also pushed Punjab Kings into an unwanted corner of IPL history.

Punjab Kings Join Unwanted IPL List
PBKS became only the second side in IPL history to follow a streak of five or more consecutive wins in completed matches with five straight defeats. The only other team to suffer a similar collapse was Sunrisers Hyderabad during the 2022 season.
For a franchise long associated with unpredictability, IPL 2026 has become another emotional roller-coaster. Punjab had surged into contention with fearless batting, successful high-scoring chases and an aggressive new identity under captain Shreyas Iyer. But just when momentum appeared firmly on their side, the season has unravelled dramatically.
The contrast has been striking. PBKS looked capable of challenging for a top-two finish during their winning streak, but their inability to close out pressure games has suddenly left their playoff ambitions hanging in the balance.
Punjab Kings Continue Their Love-Hate Relationship With 200-Plus Games
Interestingly, Punjab Kings continue to dominate one major T20 statistic despite their recent struggles.
PBKS hold the record for the most successful 200-plus chases in T20 cricket history with 11 victories, ahead of Mumbai Indians on eight, while Australia and Royal Challengers Bengaluru sit jointly third with seven.
But the same attacking philosophy has also made them vulnerable. Punjab now also own the unwanted record for the most defeats while chasing 200-plus totals in T20s with 10 losses.
That duality perfectly sums up the franchise's identity over the years - explosive, fearless and entertaining, but often chaotic under pressure.
Against Mumbai Indians, PBKS once again found themselves trapped in another wild, high-scoring contest. Despite posting a total beyond 200, they failed to shut the game down when it mattered most.
Mumbai Indians Produce Historic Late Assault
Mumbai Indians' chase itself entered the IPL record books. Captained by Jasprit Bumrah, in the absence of regular and stand-in captains, MI successfully chased down 50 runs in the final three overs - their highest-ever successful requirement in the last three overs of an IPL innings.
Their previous best successful finishes in that phase were:
- 49 vs Kolkata Knight Riders at Wankhede in 2017
- 48 vs Chennai Super Kings in Delhi in 2021
The finish highlighted Mumbai's remarkable composure under pressure while exposing Punjab's growing inability to defend commanding positions late in matches.
Shreyas Iyer's Dominant Record Against MI Finally Ends
For Shreyas Iyer, the defeat carried extra significance. Before this game, teams led by the PBKS captain had defeated Mumbai Indians in seven consecutive IPL meetings between 2022 and 2026. It was one of the longest winning streaks by a captain against a single opponent in IPL history.
Only Gautam Gambhir and Rohit Sharma have recorded longer streaks, each winning eight straight games against one opponent. MS Dhoni and David Warner also feature on the elite list with seven consecutive victories.
Remarkably, the last time Shreyas had lost to Mumbai Indians as an IPL captain before this match was during the IPL 2020 final.
Defending 200-Plus Totals Becoming a Concern
The result also added another setback to Shreyas Iyer's record while defending huge totals. Across his IPL captaincy career, Shreyas has now captained in 20 matches where his side defended scores above 200. His record stands at:
- Matches: 20
- Wins: 12
- Losses: 7
- No Result: 1
No other IPL captain has lost more than five such matches, underlining how frequently Shreyas-led teams become involved in high-scoring thrillers.
Across all T20 cricket, only Faf du Plessis has lost as many games while defending 200-plus totals.

Shreyas Iyer Praises Tilak Varma and Azmatullah Omarzai
Despite the painful defeat, Shreyas chose not to blame any specific moment during the post-match presentation.
Calling it "a tough pill to swallow," the PBKS captain instead credited Tilak Varma for his calmness and smart shot selection during the chase.
"He played amazing, he was selecting his shots pretty well and maneuvered the field nicely, so credit to him," Shreyas said.
The PBKS skipper also highlighted the impact of Azmatullah Omarzai, whose late assault transformed Punjab's innings after they initially looked set for a total closer to 170.
"At one point we were looking at around 170 to 180, and from there he simply changed the momentum towards us," Shreyas added. "Getting those scoops for sixes and taking us beyond 200 was commendable."
Playoff Race Still Alive - But Pressure Mounting
Mathematically, Punjab Kings are still alive in the playoff race, and Shreyas remained optimistic about their upcoming clashes, including a crucial day game against Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
But beyond qualification scenarios, the bigger concern for PBKS is momentum and confidence.
Five straight defeats after a dominant winning streak suggest a side struggling to handle pressure moments consistently. Their IPL 2026 campaign has become a story of extremes - brilliant highs followed by crushing collapses.
Unless Punjab Kings rediscover composure quickly, this season risks being remembered not for their explosive rise, but for one of the most dramatic collapses in IPL history.
