IPL 2026: Rajat Patidar Becomes First Captain After Hardik Pandya To Reach Consecutive IPL Playoffs In First Two Seasons

Rajat Patidar etched his name into IPL history after guiding Royal Challengers Bengaluru to playoff qualification for the second consecutive season as captain.

With RCB becoming the first team to officially qualify for the IPL 2026 playoffs following their 23-run victory over Punjab Kings in Mullanpur, Patidar became the first captain since Hardik Pandya to achieve the rare feat of reaching the playoffs in each of his first two seasons as skipper. Overall, Patidar is now the eighth captain in IPL history to accomplish the milestone.

Very few leaders have managed to make an immediate impact as IPL captain due to the intense pressure and constantly changing dynamics of franchise cricket. Patidar has now joined an elite list featuring some of the most respected names in IPL history.

RCB Could Still Reach 20 Points in IPL 2026

The achievement becomes even more impressive considering RCB are still chasing a dominant league-stage finish.

The defending champions currently sit on 18 points from 13 matches and could finish on 20 points if they win their final league game - a landmark usually associated with title-contending teams.

Only a handful of IPL teams have managed to touch the 20-point mark in league stages previously, with sides like Mumbai Indians in 2017 and Gujarat Titans in 2022 going on to lift the trophy after reaching that milestone.

Patidar's Leadership Has Changed RCB

RCB's transformation under Patidar has been one of the defining stories of IPL 2026. For years, Bengaluru were criticised for inconsistency, emotional decision-making, and over-reliance on star players. Under Patidar, however, the franchise has looked far calmer, tactically sharper, and more balanced across departments.

His composed leadership style, tactical flexibility, and ability to back players under pressure have stood out throughout the campaign.

More importantly, Patidar has achieved the feat while leading a franchise constantly under the spotlight due to its massive fanbase and expectations.

From Domestic Batter To Elite IPL Captain

Patidar's rise continues to be one of the IPL's most inspiring modern stories. From battling for opportunities in domestic cricket to now joining an elite leadership club featuring Dhoni, Rohit, and Hardik, the RCB skipper has quietly built a remarkable captaincy resume in a very short span.

And with RCB now entering the playoffs as one of the strongest teams in the tournament, Patidar's growing reputation as a long-term IPL leader only continues to strengthen.
