With the IPL 2026 season still months away, tensions have unexpectedly spilled beyond the cricket field, as political and religious undertones enter the conversation surrounding Bangladesh cricketer Mustafizur Rahman.

The senior left-arm pacer's inclusion in the Kolkata Knight Riders squad has triggered sharp reactions from religious groups in Madhya Pradesh's Ujjain, turning a sporting decision into a national debate.

The controversy erupts amid reports of violence against Hindu minorities in Bangladesh, which have fuelled anger and emotional responses in parts of India. Against this backdrop, certain religious organisations have openly questioned whether Mustafizur should be allowed to feature in the upcoming IPL season.

Users on social media have been questioning the KKR team management and co-owner Shah Rukh Khan for buying Bangladeshi player despite tensions between the neighbouring countries, and anti-India rhetorics from Muhammad Yunus-led government in Dhaka.

Ujjain Priests Issue Open Warning

The situation escalated after Mahavir Nath, chief priest of the Rinmukteshwar Mahadev Temple in Ujjain, issued a strong public warning. He claimed that if Mustafizur Rahman is permitted to play in the IPL, saints and religious groups would attempt to enter stadiums and disrupt matches.

The priest went as far as threatening damage to the pitch and interruption of games, remarks that have raised serious concerns over security and law-and-order arrangements ahead of the tournament. Similar statements from other religious outfits have followed, amplifying the pressure on cricket authorities.

Why KKR's Decision Is Being Questioned

KKR had secured Mustafizur Rahman for ₹9.2 crore at the IPL 2026 auction after a competitive bidding battle with Chennai Super Kings. However, the franchise's decision has since come under scrutiny on social media, where sections of fans have demanded restrictions on Bangladeshi players.

Despite the backlash, Mustafizur is no stranger to the IPL. He was ruled out of the IPL 2025 edition after playing three games due to injury for Chennai Super Kings. However, the 30-year-old was one of the highlights of the IPL 2024 season for the CSK, after being picked up at the base price of ₹2 crore. He picked up 14 wickets in 9 games for the Yellow Army.

Having built a reputation as a reliable death-overs specialist in Indian conditions, He represented Delhi Capitals in the IPL 2023 edition of the cash-rich league. His experience and left-arm variation were key reasons behind KKR's aggressive pursuit at the auction.

What Next? BCCI Yet to Respond

From a cricketing standpoint, Mustafizur Rahman has featured in 60 IPL matches, claiming 65 wickets, making him one of the more experienced overseas fast bowlers in the league. However, the current controversy has shifted the focus away from performance and into sensitive socio-political territory.

As of now, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has not issued any official statement on the matter. The big question remains whether the BCCI will intervene under mounting pressure or uphold the league's established framework of separating sport from political and religious issues.
