IPL 2026: Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Shattered Chris Gayle's Six-Hitting Record in Nearly Half the Balls
There are destructive T20 seasons. And then there is what Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has produced in IPL 2026.
The 15-year-old Rajasthan Royals batter has officially rewritten the limits of six-hitting in T20 cricket, smashing 65 sixes this season - the most ever by any batter in a T20 tournament.

In doing so, he surpassed the legendary Chris Gayle, whose iconic IPL 2012 campaign for Royal Challengers Bengaluru had stood untouched for 14 years.
But the truly absurd part is not merely that Sooryavanshi broke the record. It is how quickly he did it.
Gayle needed 456 balls to hit 59 sixes in IPL 2012. Sooryavanshi has smashed 65 sixes in just 266 deliveries. That is nearly half the number of balls.
The Most Violent Six-Hitting Season T20 Cricket Has Ever Seen
The scale of Sooryavanshi's dominance becomes clearer once the strike frequencies are examined.
Gayle's 2012 season was previously considered the gold standard of T20 power-hitting. The Universe Boss hit a six every 7.7 deliveries during that campaign.
Sooryavanshi is currently hitting a six every 4.3 balls. That difference is staggering.
Most Sixes in a T20 Tournament
| Player | Sixes | Tournament/Season | Balls per Six |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vaibhav Sooryavanshi | 65* | IPL 2026 | 4.3 |
| Chris Gayle | 59 | IPL 2012 | 7.7 |
| Andre Russell | 52 | IPL 2019 | 4.7 |
| Chris Gayle | 51 | IPL 2013 | 8.9 |
| Jos Buttler | 45 | IPL 2022 | 12.9 |
This is not simply record-breaking batting. This is batting that appears statistically unnatural even by modern T20 standards.
The Eliminator Against SRH Became His Greatest Statement Yet
If there were any doubts about whether Sooryavanshi could dominate on the biggest stage, the IPL 2026 Eliminator against Sunrisers Hyderabad erased them permanently.
In one of the greatest playoff innings in IPL history, the teenager smashed 97 off only 29 balls, hammering 12 sixes against an international-calibre bowling attack.
The innings completely dismantled SRH inside the PowerPlay itself.
And the records kept arriving.
Fastest Fifties in IPL Playoffs/Knockouts
| Player | Balls for Fifty | Opponent | Season |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vaibhav Sooryavanshi | 16 | vs SRH | 2026* |
| Suresh Raina | 16 | vs KXIP | 2014 |
Matching Suresh Raina's long-standing playoff record alone would have been remarkable. But Sooryavanshi's innings went far beyond that.
Twelve Sixes in 29 Balls: A New Playoff Benchmark
The RR opener finished with 12 sixes in the innings - the most ever by any batter in an IPL playoff match.
He overtook Shubman Gill, who had struck ten sixes against Mumbai Indians in Qualifier 2 of IPL 2023.
More astonishingly, Sooryavanshi's first ten sixes came in just 24 deliveries.
No batter in IPL history has ever reached ten sixes that quickly.
Even Gayle's legendary 175* against Pune Warriors India in 2013 required 27 balls to reach ten maximums.
Most Sixes in an IPL Playoff Innings
| Player | Sixes | Opponent | Season |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vaibhav Sooryavanshi | 12* | vs SRH | 2026 |
| Shubman Gill | 10 | vs MI | 2023 |
He Is Redefining What Strike Rates Can Look Like
Perhaps the most ridiculous number from Sooryavanshi's season is not the six tally at all. It is his strike rate. The teenager has scored 680 runs this season at a strike rate of 242.85.
No batter in T20 history had previously crossed even a 200 strike rate while scoring 600-plus runs in a tournament. Sooryavanshi is the first.
Highest Strike Rates in 600+ Run T20 Tournament Seasons
| Player | Runs | Strike Rate | Tournament |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vaibhav Sooryavanshi | 680* | 242.85 | IPL 2026 |
| Rilee Rossouw | 623 | 192.28 | T20 Blast 2022 |
The gap itself is almost difficult to comprehend. A strike-rate difference of over 50 points at this scoring volume is virtually unheard of in elite T20 cricket.
Gayle Comparisons Are No Longer Avoidable
Until now, comparisons with Chris Gayle usually felt exaggerated whenever new power-hitters emerged. This case is different.
Sooryavanshi has now equalled Gayle's record of four IPL innings featuring ten or more sixes. Three of those have come in IPL 2026 alone - the most by any batter in a single edition.
Most IPL Innings With 10+ Sixes
| Player | Innings |
|---|---|
| Chris Gayle | 4 |
| Vaibhav Sooryavanshi | 4* |
At just 15 years old, he is not merely breaking records. He is rewriting what even the most destructive T20 batting seasons are supposed to look like. And perhaps the most frightening part for bowlers across the IPL is this:
He may only be getting started.
