IPL 2027: Why CSK Might Release Prashant Veer, Reconsider Kartik Sharma Retention
New Delhi, Nov 2: Chennai Super Kings could make a significant call ahead of the IPL 2027 auction, with reports suggesting that the five-time champions are likely to release their expensive uncapped recruit Prashant Veer.
The possibility of parting ways with the Uttar Pradesh all-rounder, who was bought for Rs 14.2 crore, would mark a rethink of the franchise's strategy after spending a staggering Rs 28.4 crore on two uncapped players at the IPL 2026 auction.

CSK made headlines at the auction last year when they secured the services of Prashant for Rs 14.2 crore. The franchise matched that amount to sign Rajasthan wicketkeeper-batter Kartik Sharma, making both players as the most expensive uncapped recruits in IPL auction history. The investment reflected CSK's willingness to look beyond established names and back young Indian talent. However, after a disappointing IPL 2026 campaign, the franchise could now be considering a reshuffle ahead of the next season.
But why would CSK consider releasing players they invested so heavily in just a year ago? And could the franchise be looking at a different strategy to get the best out of its expensive young recruits? There are several cricketing and financial factors that could explain the reported move.
1. Prashant Veer: The Rs 14.2 crore investment that failed to take off
Prashant was arguably the more intriguing of CSK's two expensive uncapped recruits. The 21-year-old left-arm spinner and middle-order batter from Uttar Pradesh was viewed as a long-term investment, someone the franchise could groom into a quality all-rounder.
His signing also came at a time when CSK were looking to move forward after the departure of Ravindra Jadeja, who was traded to Rajasthan Royals along with Sam Curran ahead of the IPL 2026 auction. Prashant was seen as a potential long-term option who could develop into an important Indian spin-bowling all-rounder.
However, his debut IPL season did not go as expected. Prashant featured in six matches, scoring 90 runs in five innings at an average of 45 and a strike rate of 134.32. He remained unbeaten three times and registered a highest score of 43.
Those batting numbers were not particularly poor for a young player in his first season. The bigger concern was his limited involvement with the ball. Prashant bowled just 12 deliveries across the tournament, conceding 25 runs without taking a wicket.
For a player signed primarily as an all-rounder, the lack of bowling opportunities raises questions about his role in the team's combination. If CSK do not see him as a regular bowling option, they may find it difficult to justify retaining him for Rs 14.2 crore.
At 20, Prashant has plenty of time to develop, and one season should not define his career. But from CSK's perspective, releasing him could be a way to reassess his value rather than commit such a large portion of their purse to an unproven IPL prospect.
2. Kartik Sharma: Why his case is different from Prashant's
Kartik's situation is considerably different. Unlike Prashant, the Rajasthan wicketkeeper-batter had a more substantial opportunity in the playing XI and delivered encouraging returns during his debut season.
The right-handed batter featured in 11 matches, scoring 295 runs at an average of 32.77 and a strike rate of 136.57. He registered two half-centuries, with a highest score of 71.
His unbeaten 54 against Mumbai Indians and 71 against Lucknow Super Giants were among the notable contributions in his maiden IPL campaign. Those performances showed that he could handle the demands of the competition and provide CSK with an attacking middle-order option.
His numbers make a stronger case for retention than Prashant's, particularly considering his age and potential for further development.
That is why releasing the 20-year-old would be a more debatable decision. CSK could still consider the Rs 14.2 crore price tag too high, but his performances have given the franchise reasons to continue investing in him. Rather than treating both players as similar release candidates, the management may have to make separate assessments of their value and roles.
In fact, recent reports have indicated that Prashant is the more likely candidate to be released, while Kartik's position could be stronger after his productive debut campaign. No final decision has been confirmed.

3. CSK need more financial flexibility at the auction
Perhaps the biggest factor behind the possibility of releasing Prashant is the financial flexibility it would offer CSK.
The franchise spent Rs 28.4 crore on the two uncapped players at the previous auction. With a limited purse available for the next mini-auction, the management may have to make difficult choices about how much money it can afford to keep tied up in young players.
Releasing a player bought for Rs 14.2 crore would free up a significant amount under the auction purse, allowing CSK to address more immediate squad requirements.
After an underwhelming 2026 campaign, the franchise may need to strengthen multiple departments rather than concentrate a large amount on one or two prospects. A more dependable bowling attack, greater depth in the batting order and a balanced combination could all be priorities.
The decision, therefore, may not be about giving up on a young player's potential. It could simply be about whether the money committed to him can be used more effectively elsewhere.
4. A new coaching regime could change the assessment
CSK's decisions ahead of the 2027 season will also be shaped by a significant change in their coaching setup.
Former India fast bowler Zaheer Khan has taken over as head coach after the franchise parted ways with long-time coach Stephen Fleming. The support staff has also been revamped, with Mohit Sharma, Albie Morkel and Gareth Batty joining as assistant coaches. James Foster and Sridharan Sriram continue in their respective roles.
The new coaching group will have to assess the existing squad and identify the players who fit into its plans. That includes deciding whether Prashant can be developed into a regular all-round option and whether Kartik can become a long-term middle-order mainstay.
A change in coaching personnel does not automatically mean a change in faith in the youngsters. However, the new management may have a different assessment of the squad's requirements and the roles that need to be filled before IPL 2027.

5. Could CSK release Prashant and buy him back at a lower price?
One possibility that makes the reported move particularly interesting is the prospect of CSK releasing Prashant and attempting to buy him back at the IPL 2027 auction.
Releasing a player does not necessarily mean a franchise has lost faith in his ability. CSK could allow Prashant to return to the auction pool, reassess his market value and bid for him again if the price is more manageable.
Such a move would give the franchise greater financial flexibility while keeping open the possibility of retaining a player it originally identified as a long-term investment.
However, it would also carry a risk. Other franchises could recognise Prashant's potential and enter the bidding, leaving CSK with no guarantee of getting him back. The franchise would have to decide whether the potential savings justify the possibility of losing him to another team.
Kartik's situation could be different. Given his more productive debut season, CSK may prefer to retain him rather than risk losing a promising young batter in the auction.
What should CSK do with their Rs 28.4 crore duo?
The contrasting performances of Prashant and Kartik mean CSK should not necessarily view the two investments through the same lens.
Prashant's limited role with the ball and the absence of a breakthrough performance make his Rs 14.2 crore price tag difficult to justify. Releasing him could give CSK the financial room to address other areas while leaving open the possibility of buying him back at a lower price.
Kartik, on the other hand, has shown enough with the bat to warrant another opportunity. His 295 runs, two half-centuries and strike rate above 136 suggest that he could become a valuable middle-order option with more experience.
Ultimately, CSK's retention decisions will offer an early indication of how Zaheer Khan and the new coaching group intend to rebuild the side. The franchise's challenge will be to strike a balance between backing young talent and assembling a squad capable of challenging for the title.
For Prashant, the next auction could bring an unexpected second chance at a different price. For Kartik, it could be an opportunity to build on a promising debut season. And for CSK, the decisions surrounding their Rs 28.4 crore investment could be among the most important steps in shaping their IPL 2027 campaign.
