IPL Auction 2025: South African batting stalwart Faf du Plessis may be in stellar form in the ongoing Abu Dhabi T10 tournament, but that hasn't eased his uncertainty about the ongoing IPL auction.
The former Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) captain, who led the franchise in the last two IPL seasons, recently expressed doubts about his prospects in the auction despite his fitness, form, and experience. IPL Auction 2025 Highlights

Du Plessis, playing for Morrisville Samp Army in the T10 league, has impressed with some explosive performances, including a blistering *76 off 26 balls*, and two half-centuries in just four matches. Yet, when asked about his IPL future, he maintained a cautious outlook, hinting at the unpredictable nature of the league's auction dynamics.
You never know with IPL. I've played a lot of cricket in the IPL, and I know with auctions, nothing is guaranteed. I don't even know what's going on. I don't think my name has come up yet. So let's see. I mean, there's a lot of batters already been picked up. So let's see what happens," du Plessis remarked.
Faf du Plessis made his IPL debut in 2012 and has since played 145 matches, amassing 4,571 runs at an impressive average of 35.99. Throughout his IPL career, he has struck 37 half-centuries, with his highest score being 96. Du Plessis has also showcased his power-hitting ability, smashing 421 fours and 166 sixes. He has played a significant role in Chennai Super Kings' IPL triumphs in 2018 and 2021 season.
In the 2024 IPL Auction, he was acquired by the RCB for Rs 7.00 crore. His last IPL appearance was in May 2024, where he scored 17 runs off 14 balls against Rajasthan at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
At 40, du Plessis remains one of the fittest and most consistent players in franchise cricket, known for his disciplined fitness regimen and on-field energy. However, his age could be a significant factor at the auction, where franchises often prioritize younger talents for long-term investments. Although he captained RCB with distinction in the last two seasons, teams might lean toward fresher options in a bid to build for the future.
The IPL auction process has often been ruthless for experienced players, who, despite their track record, face stiff competition from emerging talents. With teams always on the lookout for younger players with potential longevity, even high-performing veterans like du Plessis can be left without a contract.
Despite the uncertainty, du Plessis's form and commitment to fitness are beyond question. His recent performances in the T10 league serve as a testament to his enduring abilities. Reflecting on his fitness and motivation, he shared what drives him to keep competing at the highest levels.
"I'm still very motivated for my own personal games. So if you're motivated to keep improving and making sure that your performance is always at a level where you're competing amongst the great players of the world, I still have that drive within myself to do that, and I'll push that for as long as that drive is there," he said. "Mentally, I'm still fresh, and from a physical point of view, I still feel very motivated and fresh as well."
This commitment to fitness and high-level performance has allowed du Plessis to stay relevant in various leagues around the world. However, the IPL is unique in its fiercely competitive nature, with younger players and emerging talents often taking precedence in the auction room.
The IPL 2025 auction will indeed test whether franchises still see du Plessis as a valuable asset or whether they'll shift focus to younger players. For now, du Plessis is doing what he does best i.e. scoring runs, staying fit, and maintaining a positive outlook.
The second day of IPL Auction on Monday (November 25) will ultimately reveal whether he has another season in the IPL, but for fans, he remains a legend whose passion for the game continues to inspire.
