Jofra Archer plays for his old school during rehab, England team management caught unawares

The saga of England's star pacer Jofra Archer's rehabilitation from a long-term elbow injury took an unexpected turn this week even as the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) planned to take direct control.

The talented fast bowler, who was recently handed over a two-year ECB central contract despite battling injuries, was found to have played for his old school team in Barbados without the knowledge of the board or team management.

This surprising development has put the ECB's efforts to oversee Archer's recovery and manage his workload effectively in a fix as the team management has been caught unawares.

The 28-year-old Archer remains a crucial player for England, having played a crucial role in their 2019 World Cup victory at home. Despite being plagued by a fractured right elbow and a stress fracture of the back, the right-arm pacer was handed a two-year central contract by the ECB, reflecting their confidence in his abilities and potential for a long and successful career.

The contract was not only a testament to Archer's past contributions but also a strategic move to guide and monitor his rehabilitation away from the pressures of T20 franchise cricket. England aim to bring the Barbados-born cricketer to fitness ahead of the T20 World Cup, scheduled to be held in June next year in the West Indies and the USA.

Jofra Archer Fitness Saga Witnesses Unanticipated Twist

The carefully laid plans of the ECB hit a snag when it was revealed that Archer had participated in a match for his old school team, Foundation, against Lords in the Barbados Cricket Association League. He picked up 4 for 18 on day one of the three-day game, folding Lords for 118 in the first innings.

This raised eyebrows, as it contradicted the narrative of the ECB taking control of Archer's rehabilitation and workload management. The surprise revelation occurred just as the speedster had withdrawn from the upcoming IPL 2024 Auction to ensure the ECB could oversee his recovery process.

England Managing Director Unaware Of Jofra Archer's Gig

Rob Key, the managing director of the England cricket team, was caught off guard when informed of Archer's involvement in the Barbados match. Despite expressing the desire to "be in control" of Archer's rehabilitation, Key was unaware of the bowler's recent on-field exploits.

When journalists apprised Key about Archer's exploits with the ball, he said, "I'm not aware of that..."I'll find out."

England not hurrying Archer's recovery: Rob Key

"Jofra was bowling out here," Key said. "As you often see with Jofra, he rocks up and you think 'what's going to happen here?', and he ends up bowling 95 miles an hour and he looks like he's an absolute genius. But we're just going to take it slow with him. We don't want to put any sort of deadlines on him. That's what we've done in the past, we're trying to learn from what we've done in the past with Jofra," Key added further.

The disconnect between the ECB's intentions and Archer's actions has led to questions about the effectiveness of the board's strategy in managing the star player's return to competitive cricket. With the T20 World Cup approaching, the English are hopeful that Archer can regain full fitness and play a crucial role in defending the title.

Despite his keenness to participate in the IPL auction, the ECB was determined to exercise caution and take a slow approach to his comeback. Rob Key emphasised the need to avoid setting strict deadlines and learn from past mistakes in managing Archer's injuries, particularly his complex elbow injury.

Key further said, "Now we're taking control of him coming back. We're not going to say you need to get back for this part here. From what they've said, an elbow injury is a complicated place to have an injury. So we just want to take this as slow as possible.

"Jofra was keen to go into the IPL auction but we just feel like, actually, the best way to do this now is just for us to be in control of it. There's no commitment either way, and we can then just bring you back.

"If it takes an extra couple of months, but he gets another couple of years out of his career, and gets back fully... I think he's worth his weight in gold."
