Maxwell, who plays for Kings XI Punjab (KXIP), has been ruled out of the remainder of the Twenty20 tournament in India due to a side strain injury, Cricket Australia (CA) said today (May 17). The 27-year-old Maxwell has scored 179 runs in 11 innings in the tournament.

Australians Steve Smith (Rising Pune Supergiants), Shaun Marsh (KXIP), Mitchell Marsh (Pune) and John Hastings (Kolkata Knight Riders) were earlier out of IPL due to various injuries.

"Cricket Australia has today advised that all-rounder Glenn Maxwell is returning home from the Indian Premier League (IPL) with a side strain injury," a media release from CA said on Tuesday.

Australian team physiotherapist, David Beakley said: "Glenn reported increasing soreness in his left abdomen area following last night's (May 15) match (Vs Sunrisers Hyderabad) and as such a decision was made for him to return home for further assessment and treatment ahead of the West Indies tour.

"From the information we have so far, the injury doesn't appear to be something that will prevent Glenn from participating in this tour, but we are keen to give him the necessary time to recover before departing to the West Indies at the end of this month."

A further update will be provided once Maxwell has been assessed prior to departure for the tour of the West Indies, CA added.

KXIP are out of the play-offs race after a poor season. They managed only 4 wins out of 12 matches. The Murali Vijay-led side is at number 7 in the Points Table. They play Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) tomorrow (May 18) in Bengaluru.
