Kolkata Knight Riders managed to pull off a thrilling victory at the expense of Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the Eden Gardens in a crucial IPL 2024 match on Sunday (April 21).
On a scintillating afternoon in Kolkata, the KKR side won by just 1 run and managed to prevail with a nail-biting win. With the victory, KKR moved to the 2nd spot in the table with 10 points in seven matches. On the other hand, RCB remains rooted at the bottom of the table with 2 points in eight matches.

On a hot afternoon at Eden Gardens, KKR set a towering score of 222 runs against RCB. Shreyas Iyer led the charge with a superb fifty, following a rapid start by Phil Salt, who hammered 48 runs off 14 balls. Additional contributions came from Venkatesh Iyer and Rinku Singh, with Ramandeep Singh and Andre Russell boosting the final total. This marked the fourth occasion this season KKR surpassed the 200-run mark.
RCB's response began with Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis opening, but their partnership was short-lived due to quick dismissals, including a controversial exit for Kohli. Rajat Patidar and Will Jacks then took the helm, amassing a 102-run partnership in 48 balls. Despite losing wickets to Andre Russell and Sunil Narine, RCB kept up the pace with Dinesh Karthik and Prabhudessai adding crucial runs. The chase intensified in the last three overs, requiring 37 runs.
Harshit Rana's dismissal of Prabhudessai set the stage for a dramatic finish. Russell's removal of Karthik in the penultimate over left RCB needing 21 runs from the last six balls. Karun Sharma's three sixes off Mitchell Starc brought RCB to the brink of victory. However, Sharma's dismissal and Locke Ferguson's run-out on the final ball sealed KKR's win by a single run.

Faf du Plessis (RCB): (On Virat Kohli Dismissal)"It was crazy. Rules are rules, Virat and myself in that space thought the ball was higher than his waist. You always find one team happy and the other not so with such decisions.
(Batting of RCB) With a target like 220, takes a hell of a lot to get there. When you haven't won for a while, just that clarity. Narine's over was the turning point for me. We feel like the game is changing. We don't feel like there is time to get in. Guys who take 7-8 balls to get in, it feels like the game does not allow you to do that anymore. It is tough. You just play the match-up with Narine, he is such a quality bowler. If you are winning games and get the confidence of getting the team over the line, you take such decisions. I am proud of the boys, a lot of fight out there. We though the total was chaseable and thought it was a par score.
(The Aftermath) You have to maximise the powerplay, and be okay with losing two or three wickets. We are as desperate. That's why I am saying I am proud. Guys put their bodies on the line. We are just as desperate to get back to winning ways. We have an unbelievable fan base. The RCB chant is the loudest. Desperately want to make our fans proud."
Shreyas Iyer (KKR): (On two close matches) It takes a lot off your body and drains you out completely because you go through so many emotions. It's tough to stay calm but I'm elated. We got two points on the board and that's all that matters.
(On Bowling in last 3 overs) It's extremely tough when the pressure is on, I feel that every individual should put their hands up and take the responsibility. Russell did that by picking up two wickets and completely changed the game in our favor, that kind of attitude is needed in the team. It's a funny game, when you need 18 runs off 6 balls, the pressure is on the bowler. One six here and there, it completely changes the momentum.
(The Move forward) It is important that we maintain our calmness and stay in the present and make the batter hit where you want them to hit. We need to stick to our routines and processes and see to it that we execute the things we want. It was a pivotal knock, I wanted to stay till the end and steady the ship. We were losing wickets and I wanted to stay till the end and see it off. We got some important boundaries towards the end and I was very happy about that."
Kolkata Knight Riders: 222/6 in 20 overs (Shreyas Iyer 50, Phil Salt 48; Cameron Green 2/35). Royal Challengers Bengaluru: 221 all out in 20 overs (Will Jacks 55, Rajat Patidar 52; Andre Russell 3/25)
Result: KKR won by 1 run
