Kuldeep Yadav's Delhi Capitals Future in Doubt After Disastrous IPL 2026 Season: Sources

New Delhi, May 27: There was a time, not too long ago, when Kuldeep Yadav was the heartbeat of Delhi Capitals' bowling attack. In IPL 2022, the left-arm wrist-spinner scripted one of the competition's finest comeback stories, claiming 21 wickets and re-establishing himself as one of the most dangerous spinners in franchise cricket.

Three years later, the mood around him could not be more different.

Kuldeep Yadav s Delhi Capitals Future in Doubt After Disastrous IPL 2026 Season Sources

Sources informed myKhel that Delhi Capitals team management is now seriously considering options whether they should be retaining the left-arm spinner from Uttar Pradesh ahead of the IPL 2027 auction after a deeply underwhelming IPL 2026 campaign that raised concerns internally about both form and value for money.

"The franchise hierarchy is increasingly leaning towards releasing Kuldeep and reallocating those funds elsewhere for IPL 2027," a source on condition of anonimity informed myKhel.

A Season That Never Took Off

Kuldeep finished IPL 2026 with just 10 wickets in 12 matches, conceding 381 runs in 37 overs at an economy rate of 10.30, with his best figures of 3/29 coming against Kolkata Knight Riders in Match 70. His best figures, however, did little to mask a season where he consistently struggled to control games through the middle overs.

His final outing of the campaign, against Kolkata Knight Riders at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, summed up the season perfectly. Kuldeep returned figures of 0/41 and looked a shadow of the bowler Delhi Capitals had retained for Rs 13.25 crore ahead of the season.

The decline becomes sharper when compared to his recent returns. In IPL 2025, Kuldeep ended as Delhi Capitals' leading wicket-taker with 15 wickets, justifying the franchise's faith in retaining him at a premium price. The expectation within the setup was that the experienced spinner would build on that momentum and spearhead the bowling attack once again.

Instead, his impact almost disappeared.

Sources further informed myKhel that the Delhi Capitals management had expected far greater consistency and match-winning influence from a player who arrived with the pedigree of being part of India's 2024 T20 World Cup-winning squad and 2025 Champions Trophy campaign.

"What particularly disappointed sections within the management, was Kuldeep's tendency to attribute his struggles to dropped catches and unhelpful pitch conditions during the season," the source added further. That excuse reportedly did not sit well internally, especially given the performances of other senior spinners across the league under similar circumstances.

Other Spinners Flourished in the Same Conditions

The larger IPL 2026 landscape has only amplified scrutiny around Kuldeep's performances. While Kuldeep struggled to impose himself, several spinners dominated matches consistently across venues and phases of play.

Rashid Khan finished with 19 wickets for Gujarat Titans and once again showcased his ability to control games under pressure. Noor Ahmad emerged as Chennai Super Kings' middle-overs enforcer, taking 11 wickets in overs 7 to 16 alone while maintaining an economy rate below eight.

KKR's Varun Chakravarthy crossed 200 T20 wickets and remained one of the most economical wicket-taking options in the tournament, while his veteran teammate Sunil Narine continued to thrive despite the increasingly batting-friendly nature of the league.

Then came the emergence of Allah Ghazanfar. The 20-year-old Afghan spinner enjoyed a breakthrough debut season for Mumbai Indians, taking 13 wickets in just nine matches and breaking Harbhajan Singh's long-standing franchise record for most PowerPlay wickets by a Mumbai Indians spinner in a single season.

This was the level Kuldeep was expected to operate at.

Instead, IPL 2026 became a season where younger and more dynamic spin options consistently outperformed him in the same tournament, often on the same surfaces and against the same batting line-ups.

Delhi Capitals Facing a Difficult Decision

Kuldeep's career trajectory suggests writing him off entirely would be dangerous. He has rebuilt himself before.

After losing form dramatically during his final years with Kolkata Knight Riders and missing IPL 2021 because of a knee injury, Kuldeep resurrected his T20 career following his move to Delhi Capitals. His 21-wicket season in 2022 remains one of the most impressive revivals by an Indian spinner in recent IPL history.

Even after a quieter 2023, he responded with another productive season in 2024, taking 16 wickets in 11 matches. But IPL mega auctions fundamentally change franchise thinking.

Age, price tag, long-term squad balance, and momentum all become major considerations. Kuldeep will be 32 heading into IPL 2027, and with Delhi Capitals potentially looking to reshape their bowling core for the next cycle.

For all his contributions to Delhi Capitals and Indian cricket, sentiment rarely dictates auction strategy.

And after an IPL 2026 season that yielded only 10 wickets in 12 matches at an economy rate exceeding 10, worst in his IPL career, the belief within the Delhi Capitals setup appears to be that moving on may now represent the smarter long-term decision.
